Yamaha 02r - Logic Pro

Hello.

I was desperately hoping someone with a lot of knowledge in the area could give me their advice. Myself and my group have a Yamaha 02r through which we wish to record onto Logic Studio on my Mac G5.

As we wish to record with our set mixes through the 02r into the Mac, what I wish to know is the best way to link these two systems together to make the recording possible?

I have looked up the possibility of ADAT cards to link up to my G5s optical input but, truthfully, I don't fully understand them. The other option is an audio interface device with dual inputs (for analog left and right) and while this process seems simpler to me in theory, I am unsure as to whether the quality would be comparable or even sufficient.

I would be extremely grateful for any experts advice on how to set my system up so I can get down to recording if possible. I have a budget of around €400 to spend if necessary. Thank you very much for your time,

Evan Heneghan.

In order to use ADAT slots of your Yamaha 02r for recording inside Logic you need an interface ADAT I/O...

The Optical Ins of your G5 cannot be used... because they are TOSLINK (only 2 channel as L and R)

the ADAT output of 02r (if the slot is already connected) requires an ADAT Audio interface!

A good one should be the RME PCI (be sure about your G5 PCI slot version.. ask for compatibility)
http://www.rme-audio.com/english/hammer/d9652.htm

Or also I suggest to check for Firewire audio cards with ADAT 8- channels IN/OUT

there are MOTU on the second hand market that can help you...

your Yamaha 02r works at 44.1 and 48 Khz... to use both of the 8 channels
(at 96 Khz the Number if OUTs will be 4IN/OUT so you don't noot to look for 96Khz interface)

if your budget is arround 400 you can find many MOTU MKI or MKII on auction sites...

you just need ADAT I/O up to 48Khz device and you can use the Yamaha WorldClock as Master Clock device!!

Sure with RME 400 you will be able to use full INs OUTs including analog and ADAT to recording simultaneously separate tracks (world clock IN/OUT BNC connectors are required)

About control room... you need to connect your Studio monitors to the control room output...
the RME device can be connect also in the analog input outputs...

I don't remember well because my 02r is not here...
I hope you have the mixer manual...
I think you need an analog slot that it is connect near the Digital ADAT slot for use the 1/4 jack INs/OUTs....
but if your 02r is without analog slot... you can connect the RME analog INs to Aux output of the mixer and use Line ins for the RME OUTs

I cannot be more precise because the 02r is a old device
because I do not remember, long years have passed since I used the 02r 😉

Thanks

Thank you..
the Yamaha 02r is great Mixer...
if you have question related to How to use SMPTE Midi sync in oreder to use 02r quth Logic... fell free to ask...

Last thing
about Master Slave device...
Maybe RME can be used as master clock device...
BUT the 02r comes with a very good World Clock generator...
I'm not sure about wich is the best World Clock Generator.

Check for the best and easy connection...

The 02r was the first Digital Mixer for me ... after Years of Analog Recording Studio.

Good Luck

Hey there,

guess I'm late chiming in.... I may be partial but I would suggest the route I went...

Yamaha My16-mLAN card. Goes right into the back of your O2R. One Firewire cable goes from your G5 to this card and that's it. No need for a pci card or breakout box or anything.

You can do 8 tracks of 24/96 or 16 tracks at 24/44. I have two of these cards installed and daisychained together and personally never have a need to multitrack more than 16tracks @ 24/96.
One beautiful thing about this is, unless/until you can get a dedicated clock, not only do you have 2 way digital audio to and from your G5 via one firewire cable, but you also have your wordclock in there as well. ( and of course your midi, but only to use your O2R as a control surface, which for Logic works pretty well. )
I've been using this setup for a few years now, and aside from the initial software setup and learning to boot computor first, THEN O2r, it has been a completely reliable and transparent system.
