So i posted the other day about different hardware/software to get if i were to buy a macbook pro. i was set on the 15" but now i am thinking of maybe a 17". ive never owned a mac before, this will be my first one. i will use it for college and for creative writing/theatre/ cinema and screen studies which i will b using for video editing as well. should i get the 15" or should i spend the money on the 17" and if so, what specifications should i get on either one?

I just went through this evaluation myself (weighing the 17-inch against the 15-inch), so I'll just convey what I've learned. There are 4 major differences between the two models, and you'll need to decide which features better fit your computing needs--and whether you're willing to pay more for them if required. Here they are, followed by my personal opinion about each one in italics:

*1) The screen.*

Three things to note here. Firstly, the screen is not only physically bigger, but has a higher resolution (the 17-inch screen contains 78% more pixels than the 15-inch). The upside is that the 1920x1200 display offers more room to work with (i.e. you can fit more windows on the desktop). The downside is that everything is smaller (some even complain that the fonts are a bit fuzzy), which may lead to an eye strain issue for some people over time. Secondly, the 17-inch screen has a 60% greater color gamut than the 15-inch, a potentially valuable feature to those who are particularly concerned with color depth and accuracy. Lastly, only the 17-inch MBP offers the matte screen, so for somebody who can't deal with the glossy display (as you may know, there are no shortage of complaints about the reflections), this may be the only option. I would recommend you visit the Apple store if possible to check these displays out in person.

+I was able to visit the Apple Store to check out all the models several times before I purchased. Let me first state that the display was not a deciding factor for me, as I personally liked both. I agree with those who say the 15-inch is easier to read (because of the lower res), but I also saw value in having more onscreen real estate to work with. The color gamut difference was not important to me whatsoever (and I couldn't tell the difference in person). Regarding the glossy versus matte screen, I also liked both but acknowledge that they are different. The glossy looks a bit "crisper", but I would give the edge to the matte screen (although I ended up purchasing a glossy). The reflections were not a problem for me. Also, in my opinion the grey bezel on the matte screen model detracts from the overall aesthetics of the body.+

*2) The battery.*

Two things here. The 17-inch battery lasts significantly longer than the 15-inch battery. At energy-saving settings this time can approach 7-8 hours, which is amazing for a 17-inch notebook computer. The other thing is that the 17-inch battery is not user replaceable--it must be replaced by Apple and they charge for it. However, the battery is supposed to last for 1000 recharges, so we're talking 3+ years of battery life.

+I'm never in a situation where I would be unable to use a power adapter so the battery wasn't an issue for me. If the power adapter was big and bulky like a PC adapter, I would probably value battery life more; but Apple's adapters are light and compact. This didn't factor into my decision.+

*3) The size.*

The 17-inch is longer, wider, and heavier than the 15-inch. This not only impacts portability, but also ergonomics since the way your hands rest on the keyboard is a bit different. Again, it's best to pick these up in person and get a feel for carrying them and using them.

+This was, along with price, the biggest factor for me. I typically transport my computer between several locations every day and use it in areas where there isn't much space. I also felt the 15-inch was more comfortable to use and manipulate.+

*4) The RAM.*

The 17-inch is expandable to 8 GB, while the 15-inch is only officially expandable to 4 GB. However, I've seen many unofficial claims of the latter being expandable to 6 GB. If you're into video editing or music production deep enough to require maximum RAM, this may be something you want to look into.

+4 GB is plenty of RAM for my needs, so I didn't investigate this further.+

I made my decision last night and purchased the MBP in my sig over the phone. I felt the bump to 2.93 GHz wasn't worth the extra $300. I did bump up the HDD though. I should have it in about 2 weeks, at which point I hope to post a review indicating that my new MBP is defect free and in perfect functioning condition. Stay tuned!

I too just went through this very analysis. I like your review however my decision was a little different; my choice was the 17":

1) SCREEN: 17" screen has smaller font, greater gamut and matte option compared to the 15". I choose the glossy as the reflection is manageable and the colour is better. The smaller font is modifiable with zooming and such. Changing the resolution beyond the LCD's native resolution is not something I will do as it does affect the font quality.

2) BATTERY: 17" battery is not removable, and is larger than the 15". Having had several notebooks and MacBook Pro the battery is a definitely a consumable, and I use the battery often. The greater battery time was of value to me, and the non-removal battery is manageable as there is a good Apple service centre near by for me. The better battery of the 17" is import to me.

3) SIZE: 17" is bigger and heavier. The only concern for me was use on an airplane. Although I was not able to test this out, I went for the 17" as air travel is not common for me.

4) RAM: 17" supports up to 8GB. This price is too much for me now, however, next year the price may come down and I may be able upgrade then; this of value for me.

Both the latest 15" and 17" MBP are amazing machines. The 2.66Ghz models are 300$ different in price. For 300$ a larger battery, larger screen, and 8GB RAM were worth it to me. The 50$ for 7200rpm was also worth it for me. The 2.93GHz cpu was not worth it to me.

The only reason NOT to get a 17" that I can think of is the size if it will be a problem carrying it. Otherwise it's a slam dunk that the 17" is the way to go for the screen, battery life, and ability to upgrade to 8GB. I watched an HD movie on the 17 and a 15.4 at the same time the other day and the 17 was noticeably better. I'm very tempted to get one.

Back in 2006 I faced the same situation. I opted for the 17" - although it IS more of a commitment to carry around. But that screen size has been wonderful in all applications these past couple of years.

Neoprene cases prevent scratches, and do very little for anything else. When carrying around my 17" MBP, I use a booq bag - when the computer stays in MY hands ...

But when travelling or when anyone else might handle it, nothing less than my Pelican 1495CC1 case is used.

Prices vary wildly for Pelican products - check around and make sure you're matching the exact same Pelican product number.

Some airplanes the 17" is wider than the table that comes down from the chair. I found this to be the case on a 737-300 and 737-400. The 737-700 though had a wide enough table in Southwest Airlines. As airplane carryons go, you should also be aware that very few airplanes have power outlets at every seat. The website

should be helpful. Also when you play DVD, your time for battery life lessens significantly, so that could also affect your decision.

I like that Pelican case, too. I went a different way, but the Pelican might be easier and simpler.

I bought a STM Bag (17" Large Convertible-Black) from eBags. It has a velveteen lined pocket that I will use with the bare machine most of the time. This bag has NO zippers for the bag or compartment closure; I have scratched notebooks with these ** zippers in the past. I bought a transparent Speck hard shell case for times when I am going to travel. These snap on and off easily. They JUST started shipping them; I just happened to order one and mine shipped by dumb luck today. There has apparently been a waiting list for these. I MAY get one of the available invisible film skins (one for the top and one for the bottom), but I am tired of spending money right now and this may be overkill.
