Airport Express with wired router

Question: I have a PC without wireless capabilities, a mac book pro, and a new AX. In order to get everything online I'm trying to connect my cable modem to a broadband router (Linksys RT41P2). This then connects to my PC and my Airport Express. Problem is I cannot seem to get the wireless internet to work.

The AX is set to work as a bridge (I picked that much up from some other posts), connect using ethernet, configure using DHCP.

An IP Address, and a subnet mask automatically appear but I can't get internet to work. Any suggestions?

Mac Book Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

abarfell, welcome to the discussions!

Sounds like you have the configuration correct.

You didn't mention this in your post so I assume that you do have the Express set to Create a Wireless Network, correct? Set up a network name, security, etc?

Also remember that cable modems almost always need to be reset after any change to the network is made. If you haven't already done so, power it down and let it rest for 30 minutes or so. If it has a battery, pull it.

Power down the rest of the system as well. Then restart the modem first, let it run for 5-10 minutes, then power up the Linksys, then the Express (wait for the green light), and finally your computers. See if that helps and please post back on your progress.

Thanks for the quick response. I tried resetting the modem, router, and AX, but still cannot get wireless internet. I do have the AX configured to create a wireless network and the security is WPA2 personal.

I think my problem has something to do with an IP address issue. On the summary portion of Airport Utility, my status indicates that there is a problem with the internet connection saying the wireless device does not have a valid IP address. One was assigned automatically (as was the subnet Mask, but I put in a router address (198.192.1.1) since its a Linksys router (I heard that this was what is typically used by these kinds of routers.)

Thanks again for your help.

Try a hard reset on the Express and start over.

Plug it in and hold in the reset button until you see the amber light blink rapidly. Use AirPort Utility to set it up again.

You might find it easier to use the Manual Setup.

click on the Internet icon and make sure you are set to connect using Ethernet and Connection Sharing is set to Bridge Mode. You don't have to manually do anything else.

Now click the AirPort icon at the top of the pane and then click the Wireless tab to configure your wireless. Enter network name, passwords, etc.

That's it. You should be up and running in 5 minutes.

I couldn't find the response to the advise you gave regarding the use of an airport express wired to a lyncsis router. Did it work? I have a similar problem. Can i go (ethernet) from my modem to a router, then wire my airport express to that router? I have a PS3 that was built with wireless g tech that either cant support or recognize the express's wireless n tech, and a macbook i want wireless. Also can i use any ol' router to do this?

I don't have that setup,I don't see why it wouldn't work with any router. The Airport Express has a choice of N with B and G compatibility broadcasting at 2.4 Hz instead of the 5 Hz N that it's advertised with. Talk to your ISP to figure what Auto DHCP can't remedy. Can you delete the router since your adding the Airport Express? When using the G broadcast,it isn't as powerful getting out the signal, you might have to move it closer to your ps3

my airport express is 6 inches away from my ps3. The problem is the ps3, i've read a lot of different forums and everyone is complaining about the ps3's super slow internet connection when the ps3 is wireless. Also most people cant even get the express to play nice with there ps3. I dont even want to mess with the wireless im just going to hard wire it. Im just trying to confirm or disconfirm the possibility to wire an airport express to another router simply for the extra ethernet port, that apple either stupidly or wisely didn't add depending on witch way the money is flowing.

I have a setup with my AX connected directly to the cable modem and under connection sharing, I use share a public
IP address, that way you will always have a private IP address and I've never had troubles even connecting a windows xp and my macs. You mentioned only one unwireless computer and a wireless macbook pro. For better security thats built into the AX, using the bridge mode renders it useless. You could connect the unwited computer by usb if available and use the ethernet for the AX.You hopefully have it figured out by now.
