Am currently stuck w/ a Macbook Pro that has no display after downloading/running the stand alone 10.5.7 update installer. Were no peripherals or ethernet cables attached during install. Zapping PRAM/VRAM did not help. Resetting the SMC/PMU did nothing. Nothing comes up on the display after rebooting in single-user mode. Currently in firewire target mode running Disk Utility to repairing both the disk and permissions - however, although the disk appears on the iMac I am running DU from, did not even get the firewire symbol on the target machine. Also rebooted from my Techtool Pro DVD - could here the system booting but again nothing on the screen (not blue....just black!!!).
Any ideas how to either reset the display? Is there any way I can re-run the update installer on the target machine while it's in firewire target disk mode since it seems like the install hung part way?
Have been checking the forums/discussions and not seen anything quite like this. Have tried hard/manual restarts now multiple times with no luck.
Have never had this issue using a stand alone installer in over 20 years of using Macs. This really *****.
I am expierencing the same issue on my wife's Macbook Pro3,1 (2.2ghz Core2Duo, 2GB ram, 120GB drive, Nvidia 8600M GT). Updated to 10.5.7 because for the so called video performance fixes and now have no display at all. I have tried reseting SMC and PRAM. The system boots fine just blind to the world. Entered target disk mode and booted the firewire target disk from my Macbook Pro2,2 (2.16ghz, ATI X1600, all other stats the same). Turned on screen sharing and rebooted. Wife's mac boots fine but the system.log shows errors regarding the display. Profiler lists the display adapter as a GMA X3100 with 64MB RAM and no connected display. I have tried re-installing the update through screen sharing. This is extremely frustrating. Including system log snip and machine information. Help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm assuming this isn't just a backlight tube failure, right? Have you tried shining a flashlight at the screen to see if it is still displaying stuff?
Wait a sec, this is on an iMac? I've heard of this happening on a MBP caused by an Nvidia chip failure. I've never heard of that failure on an iMac. What GPU does this machine have in it?
Wake from sleep problems are generally unrelated to the video hardware. Try a PMU reset. If that doesn't help, reinstall the combo update. Failing that, my next guess would be dodgy RAM that doesn't consistently handle switching into a low power state---has this machine always behaved this way, or just recently? Have you made any hardware changes lately?
So it lists the graphic card as a X3100, how great Apple, what a update!
Is Apple goind to wait to see more MacBook Pro no unibody with 8600M GT broken to do something? Mine is in the technical service but I am not going to pay any € to get it fixed!
I don't have the numbers to really have a good feel for that.
My gut says go with Occam's razor here---the simplest explanation is most likely correct. A known issue with matching symptoms that triggered a warranty extension program seems like a much simpler explanation than an unknown issue causing those same symptoms.
Also, five hardware failures out of... probably hundreds of thousands of machines... doesn't seem like a high enough percentage to trigger alarm bells in my head. That's still small enough to easily be explained away as random chance---a few tenths of a percent annual failure rate.... Even if you assume only a small percentage of people report such a problem on these boards, it is still within the realm of possibility.
That said, if there are fifty people with this problem tomorrow, somebody should let AppleCare know about this thread. 🙂
2 problems with 10.5.7 in 2 days... great! First my macbook pro 2.4ghz 15" (santa roza chip) didn't sleep until you turned off airport then close the lid... now a pitch black screen but the computer is on in the background...
Anyone know how to install 10.5.6 combo update through the shell?
The computer is on, I can ssh into it... got the system.log and kextstat outputs

I'm suffering this issue too.
Macbook pro (bought 2nd July 07):
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM
160GB Serial ATA Drive
SuperDrive 8X
15 Glossy Widescreen Display
No Modem
No Optional S/W
BkLit Keyboard/Mac OS-B
Updated to 10.5.7. Got a drink, returned to a black screen. To begin with I could vlc into it and checked the console log. I too noticed the 'display: Not usable' error but I also had something like 'display:illegal backlight value' too.
Having screen sharing enabled allowed me to make sure I had a full backup via TM. From previous posts in this topic I'm under the impression I need to boot from my leopard install disc and start again. Is that the answer?
The alternative I guess would be firewire mode from my intel mac mini and install?
This is not random. I have had same issue as first poster and have been battling it for 2 days. Tried different things of restart and hooked up other machines to diagnose (I have been doing this for >20 years so am not a newby). PRAM resets, SMC resets, etc had no effect). Always video was dead but in the background things were happening and I could enter passwords etc "blind" and then go into the machine in mirror display mode. A few side comments: my battery ran super hot after upgrade and processor seemed to be running more than usual too. I swapped in my other spare battery and same start issues continued.
I could also rarely (only 1x out of 10?!) boot using startup - option with my cloned 10.5.6 drive attached. So something is really word right at the core of this software.
At fiorst I thought this was all from putting the computer to sleep (see other threads) so last night I ran the mission for a few hours and then did a proper clean shut down. This morning it would start (black screen video). So I rebooted from the original 10.4 install CD (no problem here) and let it go through enough steps to sideline the old system files (i.e., disable them). Then I rebooted fro my cloned disk (everybody did a clone fo their 10.5.6 system before upgrading I assume??) and I now have 10.5.6 re-installed. Oddly, the first time it tried to reboot from 10.5.6 it also had black screen. So I reset SMC with batteries removed and AC unplugged. Then also reset PRAM/NVRAM and now it seems to be running stable again as it was under 10.5.6 a few days ago.
So this is in my view clearly related to the update. Incidentally, I did the delta downloadable update... originally.
BTW I did the same 10.5.7 update on a more recent MacBook (2007) and have had no problems ... go figure.
Also BTW I thought last fall I had one of those bad nvidia video cards so my local vendor ran all the diagnostics and said my video card was OK and charged my a hundred bucks saying Apple would not replace it even though it fit the exact criteria of flawed cards otherwise. I still am not convinced I have a faultless video card ...

Computer is early 2007 MBP 17inch, 2.4 GHz, 4GB ram, 320GB drive
Still stable after "downgrading" back to 10.5.6 from my cloned drive. I am convinced now this is an update issue with the new software not able to address the existing NVIDIA GEForce 8600M GT chipset. As another poster said, the logs were looking for a different chip... so no video although everything else was clicking along.
I will stick with 10.5.6 for the time being in my MBP. This should be a simple fix for Apple (that is not to say they will do it quickly). Meanwhile my MacBook 13" is running OK under 10.5.7 (probably because they do not have real graphics cards) and I am goig to keep my iMac under 10.5.6 for the time being ...
For those trying to restart their machines ... I suggest using a 10.4 or 10.5 CD that came with the computer to see if the graphics work with that in. Then you may need to sideline the 10.5.7 and start from scratch unless you have a cloned drive of 10.5.6 to start with.
For the brave you may try what I inadvertently did ... introduce the CD but pull it back out before it was drawn in by the machine upon start-up ... oddly the machine then booted (with video) from the hard drive 10.5.7 (but just that once). If you do not time it right you will need to force eject on the next startup (hold down mouse button upon or trackpad key upon start). That may give you time to get your data off (if you have only the one machine and have not done so yet using target mode).
I installed the 10.5.7 update from scratch, meaning I reinstalled my MacBook Pro 15" 2.2 SR model with 10.5.6, then updated to 10.5.7, everything seemed to be okay for a day. Then I went away from the computer to watch some television, came back and the screen was black. Tapping the keyboard did nothing. Restarting and doing the PRAM/VRAM, pull out battery, restart didn't fix anything. I am so disappointed with this update and now I don't know how to go back to 10.5.6. I tried booting with the original discs that came with it but get no video at all, including external video.
How do I go about reinstalling 10.5.6? Luckily my wife has the same MacBook Pro as mine and thank god I never updated that yet, I wanted to make sure everything was running smooth before updating hers. Thanks for any help.
Jack on the Move - You didn't have a problem booting from an install disc? I've got both the original 10.4 discs and a family retail 10.5 disc. I'll give them a try this evening. Did you just pop the disc in and hold down 'c', or were there other steps involved?
I've got a few backups of my drive so at worse I loose a couple of days work.
I've managed to get the grey boot up screen working, then goes black once the OS is properly booted.
I downloaded 10.5.6 combo update, using Pacifist, extracted all the graphics kexts and then ssh them to replace the 10.5.7 graphics kexts. So conclude that the prob is definitely the kext drivers.
Next step is to extract the entire Extensions folder and replace the 10.5.7 ones. Failing that it will be CoreSupported frameworks, failing that I will manually copy all the files from 10.5.6 to replace them in 10.5.7. Will try later today and post back the results.
I hope you have better luck than me. Install the OSX disc, restart and press the "C" key and it should boot into the OSX disc. Unfortunately for me, I was still getting the black screen so I couldn't see anything. I knew I was in the OSX disc boot because I couldn't eject the disc using the eject key on my mac.
I connected my mac with my wife's mac via firewire cable, booted my mac into Target Disc mode, Inserted the Leopard install disc on my wife's mac and installed leopard on my mac. Shut everything down after the install, disconnect the firewire cable, rebooted my mac. Everything is back to normal again. I'm downloading the 10.5.6 combo update and will be sticking with that until Apple iron's out all the wrinkles with 10.5.7. I'm so glad I backed up all my files before trying this update.
Hmm... I've just been to the apple reseller in town and he's suggested I try resetting the PRAM and SMC. He claimed that's the fix Apple are suggesting though I've yet to find such info on the web. Besides folk here have tried that and it's not solved the issue.
I'll try booting from the dvd but it sounds like I'm not going to be able to see what I'm doing. 😟
Does anyone know if I put my macbook pro into target disk mode and connect it to my intel mac mini and install leopard on to the macbook pro harddrive am I likely to get a working install even though the mini uses a different graphics card to the macbook pro?
