No display at all after 10.5.7 update install

Am currently stuck w/ a Macbook Pro that has no display after downloading/running the stand alone 10.5.7 update installer. Were no peripherals or ethernet cables attached during install. Zapping PRAM/VRAM did not help. Resetting the SMC/PMU did nothing. Nothing comes up on the display after rebooting in single-user mode. Currently in firewire target mode running Disk Utility to repairing both the disk and permissions - however, although the disk appears on the iMac I am running DU from, did not even get the firewire symbol on the target machine. Also rebooted from my Techtool Pro DVD - could here the system booting but again nothing on the screen (not blue....just black!!!).

Any ideas how to either reset the display? Is there any way I can re-run the update installer on the target machine while it's in firewire target disk mode since it seems like the install hung part way?

Have been checking the forums/discussions and not seen anything quite like this. Have tried hard/manual restarts now multiple times with no luck.

Have never had this issue using a stand alone installer in over 20 years of using Macs. This really *****.

Any help appreciated!

Macbook Pro 15", Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Hello,

I have a situation that is close to this.
Mac mini after Update to 10.5.7 Display not correct any more dont see the Menue bar any more. Display settings of My monitor disapeared in the system settings.
All the things You have tried I did also, spoke to the Support no luck.
Setup my machine brand new to Tried the update on the new machine setup.

You guess, same issue , no other software or stuff was installed.
So I went back to 10.5.6 and it works again.

Does anybody have some idears.

Regards

You may have seen my multiple posts above and I like a few others have found that this is indeed an Apple problem. I was just notified that my MBP 17" that has been in the shop has had its mother board replaced (along with onboard NVIDIA card) and that Apple is treating it as part of a "guaranty" repair, even though the machine is no longer under warranty and I had no AppleCare on it. No explanations ... just replaced it and it just cost me a trip to my Certified Apple Service Provider (in Switzerland) and more than my fair share of headaches.

So I will go get it when I next have the chance.

My only question remains, do I downgrade the working machine back to 10.5.6 and await snow-leopard, or do I work under the 10.5.7? Is anyone still watching this thread that brought back their machine, had the logic board replaced, and then had the problem re-occur?

so weird...

as I explained in my previous posts, I was using see2extreme to workout my un-finalized jobs. So I haven't change my logic board yet...

During this time, my MBP's display came back alive randomly (for example, now I'm using my own display...). I don't know why but sometimes when I shutdown and reboot, it comes back. Sometimes, not...

This discussion of the "no display" problem is rather funny to me and here is why:

I was actually experiencing everything that is being described in the posts here on my 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro a while ago, but the 10.5.7 combo update seemed to fix all of it completely. Machine is flawless in terms of display, sleep, and lid closing as of now. Hope you all get the issue resolved.

I do think we should declare this as solved. If you have an MBP of 2007 vintage this seems to be a relic of the unstable NVIDIA chip that was affected by the 10.5.7 update and potentially heating issues.

Apple just updated their service warranty extensions for this and will replace motherboard if you are exhibiting this behaviour. See here service extension (updated 29 May 2009):
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
Even if your machine is out of warranty this confers a 3 year coverage.

If you are not sure when your machine was built, you can extract the information from the serial number (which embeds the year and week and place of birth) or I would recommend simply using the following 64K utility to do the work for you (it tells you the date and place of birth of iPod or mac):

Bottom line is if you experience this problem and you have an MBP then bring it in to your apple dealer or store or service centre.
