canon ip4000r stopped printing over usb after update to 10.5.7

hi there!
i have a canon pixma ip4000r which is connected to my macbook pro via usb.
since the update to 10.5.7 it stopped printing. printer's joblist receives a printjob, displays "printing" but nothing happens. i tried to reinstall the printer but systems preferences are running very slowly/freezing when i plugin the usb cable. when i unplug it everything runs normal.
in addition canons printer tool crashes while trying to connect to the printer.
i have some networkprinters (hp laserjet 4100n) installed as well but they are running fine.

any suggestions?

thanks,
paul

Hello Paul,

I installed the 7 update yesterday on my test Mini using the Combo installer and saw some interesting results.

First of all, any USB printer queue was removed from the Printers list. Only the Adobe PDF and network printer queues remained.

Also, a number of Canon BJPrinter files were updated and added, some of them later versions of existing files, such as the Canon IJ Printer Utility. The strange behavior here was that older versions of the same file were left in the same folder and this is what I believe could be causing you problems.

So, I would suggest you try the following.

Unplug the iP4000 USB cable
Navigate to Mac HD/Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter and trash the entire contents of this folder.
Navigate to Mac HD/Library/Receipts and trash any Canon IP4000 files.
Empty the Trash and restart the Mac.
Run the iP4000R v4.8.3 driver installer again. This will add the files you need for your printer back into the BJPrinter folder.
Plug the iP4000 USB back into the Mac and see if the printer automatically adds to your printer list. It can take about a minute but if it doesn't then try to add it. Don't be surprised when you do try to add it you get a message stating the printer is already installed.

hi PaHu!
thanks a lot for your advice.
so i did the following:

- unplugged the printer
- deleted "Mac HD/Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter"
- deleted "Mac HD/Library/Receipts/iP4000R 483.pkg"
- deleted the printer in system prefs
- restart
- installed the new driver
- restart

when i plugin the printer it appears after a few seconds in printer list on "print & fax" in system prefs. but it is not the correct icon an he uses "standard postscript driver".
then i try to add the printer manually but i have still the same problems here:
printer appears in addprinter-list, displays the correct driver and location, after the click on "add" button the window freezes. when i unplug the usb cable, the printer will be added immediately.
unfortunately both printers still do not work. their jobslist only display "printing …" but nothing happends.
i considered if this could depend on the lenght of my usb cable (3 m) but it is the same i used before.

frustrated,
paul

it's me again!
i tried something strange. i recovered the following files from a timemachine backup which was made before 10.5.7:

Mac HD/Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter
Mac HD/Library/Receipts/iP4000R 483.pkg
Mac HD/Library/Receipts/boms/com.apple.pkg.Canon_InkjetPrinterDrivers.bom

but this does not solve the problem!
hello??? apple?? can't be …

best,
paul

finally i fixed it!
the printer is printing over usb again. here is what i have done:

1) updated osx via 10.5.7 combo updater. restart.
2) installed latest printer driver again. restart.
3) printer does not appear at all when connected via usb. ungplugged cable few times. nothing.
4) resetted the printsystem. deleted "Mac HD/Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter" and "Mac HD/Library/Receipts/iP4000R 483.pkg". empty trash. restart.
5) installed printer driver again. restart.
6) plugged in the printer. still does not appear in add printer list. unplugged.
7) changed the 2 m usb cable (which worked for over 2 years!) with a 70 cm usb cable.
8) after a while the printer appeared in the list. finally added it. some test prints, done.
9) changed th 70 cm back to the old 2 m one. printer is still working! plugged the 2 m cable into my usb-hub: still working!

i have no idea what happend to my mac after the update to 10.5.7. can't be true, that it all depends on a cable, which worked in the end?

thanks to everybody for your support!
cheers,
paul
