Have you tried resetting the print system, without the USB cable attached? Then adding the printer again?

In the list of printers in Print & Fax Prefs, control-click and select "Reset Printing System" from the contextual menu. That will delete all of your printers and the prefs files.

Thanks for trying that. One more thing to try is to remove the Canon folder from /System/Library/Printers and then reinstall the Canon driver, either from their site or from the OS X install disc. Yo can do a custom install of only the Canon drivers if you use the disc.

Does this behave differently if you try another USB port?

I am not sure what to suggest now. If you can get back to when the printer was added - it should be added automatically, without you having to go to Print & Fax Prefs - we can check the CUPS logs to see why the printer wasn't printing.

I installed the 7 update yesterday on my test Mini using the Combo installer and saw some interesting results.

First of all, any USB printer queue was removed from the Printers list. Only the Adobe PDF and network printer queues remained.

Also, a number of Canon BJPrinter files were updated and added, some of them later versions of existing files, such as the Canon IJ Printer Utility. The strange behavior here was that older versions of the same file were left in the same folder and this is what I believe could be causing you problems.

So, I would suggest you try the following.

Unplug the iP4000 USB cable
Navigate to Mac HD/Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter and trash the entire contents of this folder.
Navigate to Mac HD/Library/Receipts and trash any Canon IP4000 files.
Empty the Trash and restart the Mac.
Run the iP4000R v4.8.3 driver installer again. This will add the files you need for your printer back into the BJPrinter folder.
Plug the iP4000 USB back into the Mac and see if the printer automatically adds to your printer list. It can take about a minute but if it doesn't then try to add it. Don't be surprised when you do try to add it you get a message stating the printer is already installed.

I'm having the same problem with my Canon iP5200 and the problem happened immediately after upgrading to OS X 10.5.7. I am using an emulator with Windows installed and the printer works in Windows. I think I am going to call Apple since I am still under warranty. Will let you know if I am helped.

The problem is with 10.5.7. I reinstalled my system with original DVD (10.5.2) and printer is there and working. I am going to upgrade to 10.5.6. If you reinstall from original DVD, be sure to do it properly so all your files remain.

Paul, which update did you use? A user in another thread had luck after using the combo updater and cycling the printer. Maybe worth a try if you didn't use the combo updater.
