It looks like I am missing some thing. I just cannot believe iPhone call log is so primitive. I could not get the following information from the call logs:
1. Is it an incoming or outgoing call?
2. How long was the call?
3. List of calls made / received to/from a particular number
4. Call logs that lasts 30days or more.
First 2 has been there in all the phones including the very basic ones for many many years.
Secnd 2 has been there in BlackBerry for atleast 4 years that I know.
Is there an app that would provide these capabilities. Looks like there is an app for all the Apple shortcomings, I would think there is one for this also.
First of all, clear one thing. You bought iPhone and not Blackberry or other phone. That means iPhone won't give you the similar supply, than a Blackberry or an another phone gives.
What you wrote down, is really true and you can't decide about your calls some things because iPhone doesn't show everything but maybe with the iPhone 3.0 software update (which is coming, and will arrive this summer!) Apple solve these things.
If you are curious about how long was the call then you can see that in Settings - General - Usage - Call time at Current Period. If you see this, after every call, then you can count the calls' length.
If you are curious about that the call was incoming or an outgoing call then go to Calls - Recents - All and tap the blue arrow on the right and at the top of the next screen (which is seems after you tap the blue arrow) you can see that it was an outgoing or incoming call. It works on a 2.2.1 software, if you have older then update your iPhone.
Call logs in my opinion lasts until you don't delete them. I suppose that because I've never left undeleted my call logs list more than one month.
I hope, that I could help.

I like many other features in iPhone. I used my corporate issued Blackberry for over 5 years. When I have to buy my own, I bought iPhone. I do not regret that decision for a minute, I do strongly recommend iPhone for anyone who wants a smart phone.
I also own many Apple products, PowerBook, MacBook, iMac, iPods .... and the list goes on ........
Since I like the product in general, it does not mean I have to accept every shortcomings of the product. I do not understand why many Mac lovers take it personally when some one points out some short coming of an Apple product. Apple makes great set of products, and I love them. But lets face it there are some shortcomings in those products, if we cannot accept that, we are naive at a minimum.

Thanks for pointing out "incoming" "outgoing" message on the top of the screen. I suppose it shows that for the last conversation with that number.
If I may ask you, do you own a iPhone? The reason why I ask is because that way your statement was made, you don't owe one, or maybe you're just a new user... well, you said that the call logs of the iPhone is primitive... now let's do this point by point. I hope this will clarify things with you 🙂
Point # 1
Q : Is it an incoming or outgoing call?
A : Under the Phone Icon, tap on it, then tap RECENTS, & from the arrow to the right, tap on that & there you'll see if the call is an "Incoming or Outgoing."
Point # 2
Q : How long was the call?
A : I've got no answer for this question. For me, there's no point of knowing the length of the call, whether outgoing or incoming.
Point # 3
Q : List of calls made / received to / from a particular number
A : Again, you'll see this list from the RECENTS calls. From this lists, you can see if the calls were made yesterday or today & if it's today, you'll see the time the call was made, outgoing or incoming. There's even a tab above the name list where you can see "ALL" or "MISSED" calls only.
Point # 4
Q : Call logs that lasts 30days or more.
A : Again, why do you need a call log that keeps your calls for 30days. iPhone call logs last at least a week. For me, that's long enough already.
