Apple TV sync is taking forever- Will this happen each time I sync?

I just got a new Apple Tv. I am syncing 12 movies from iTunes and about 650 songs. This is taking forever! My question is, if I add a new movie to iTunes and want to sync it to AppleTv, will it take this long again? If I uncheck the rest of the movies for syncing, will it erase them from the Apple Tv? I do not think I can wait this long each time I want to add a new movie to the Apple Tv. Thanks in advance for you help.

I am syncing with my wifi. I have AT&T DSL elite, the website says:Downstream Speed: Up to 6.0 Mbps Upstream Speed: Up to 768. How can I tell how fast iTunes is going to AppleTv?

that's your internet speed, that has nothing to do with your internal local network.

is your WIFI "g" or "n". if it is "g" then it can take some time to sync a large amount of data (12 and 650 music tracks is quite a bit).

once the majority of your content is sync'd then you will only be syncing new content to it.
it is usually advisable to do your initial big sync over ethernet as it will be much quicker.

I think there is a problem out there with AppleTV the last few days. I really feel it has to do with either the new version of iTunes or the OS X update. My syncing is taking forever. I just keep canceling out of it... and I can't connect to the iTunes store on my ATV but can on my computers, iPhone and iPods. It's definitely an Apple problem and not a network problem!

I think you're right, buffinaz. Over the past few days, my ATV has been synching continually. Even if I shut down iTunes, it resumes synching (or starts over again), even though I haven't clicked the "sync" button. Prior to experiencing this, my ATV was synching without any problem and I could sync updated content in, literally, a matter of minutes. But this constant synching is definitely unusual...

I just bought an Apple TV and began experiencing this problem once I moved my iTunes library to an external drive. I have a MacBook Pro so I was quickly running out of room. I moved my library to an external drive that is attached to my Airport Base Station. But I'm having issues syncing and streaming. It begins to sync but goes on and on and doesn't stop. Even when I try to stream the content it constantly stops to load and repeats the process again and again. My external hard drive is a 1TB Western Digital USB 2.0.

I've read about a lot of syncing issues so far. If this continues I'm going to simply return it because it really doesn't do what it claims it should do very well.

Is this a software issue? Is it because I moved my iTunes library to an external drive? Even when I play videos on my computer it still has issues playing back.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi - I wouldn't return it just yet - been using my ATV relatively trouble free for a year or so, and just this week got this endless sync mode without syncing problem, along with the many other ATV users here. I don't think it's the ATV unit/s, Apple just needs to tweak something. It is odd - I haven't upgraded or changed anything recently - and I'm sure not upgrading to the newest iTunes after reading the recent forum posts on it!
