Buzzing Noise From Bottom of iMac

I received my brand new iMac 3 days ago. My old Powerbook had a dead pixel, my previous iMac had a dead pixel, but my new iMac has NO DEAD PIXELS!!! Instead it's got a friggin buzzing noise coming from the bottom of it!!

I have tried hitting it in certain places, but nothing, the noise goes away for a little while, then starts buzzing again for ages. I have read the recent posts about fan speeds ect, but it doesn't sound like a fan. It sounds like a hard disk constant buzz or maybe some power surge ??

When I move my mouse over the Dock icons back and forth, kinda quick, the noise picks up a little then drops down after I stop. This sounds like a hard disk issue to me. Anybody else thinks it's the hard disk?

Hi Sal D,

I had a buzzing problem when I first got my iMac.
After speaking to Apple and trying the screen brightness test it turned out to be a faulty power supply.
I ordered a new one which came in a couple of days and after swapping it out I had a very quiet iMac.

Try the brightness test but listen carefully as it only caused a very small pitch change with mine which I originally missed when I first tried it.

My iMac G5 is running again, thanks to DiskWarrior & new installation of Tiger. The noise is unchanged, and what with the other problems, this baby is going back to mother Apple.

I had a look at the other thread, but I'm not going to saw the case of the fan myself, no way, even if I have a replacement.

And for those concerned about my honeymoon, we're taking it later. No money left after partying, but a great party it was.

Hi all, it's possible that somebody has mentioned this already but i'm going to post it regardless because i have sorted the dreaded buzz.

For me the dreaded buzz was being caused by a dodgy power supply. The iMac power supply is located right at the very bottom of the iMac in the centre. I contacted apple by telephone and after a while they narrowed it down to the PSU. The agent said that apple would post a new one out to me and provided i returned the faulty one within 10 days my credit card would not be debited.

Here i am 48 hrs later, new PSU delivered by UPS, about 10 mins to reinstall and now i'm back to the silent iMac that i know and love.

Another great reason to switch to apple, they rule!!!

Because of recurring problems and consistent fan noise, I brought my iMac G5 to an Apple Service Centre (still under warrantry, and covered by AppleCare). They replaced the logic board (which took 3 weeks); indeed, I cannot find the serial number in the System Profiler as I used to do. Not sure whether I need to know it, either ?
And is it rev. a or is it rev.b now?

Fan speeds are way below the previous numbers I recorded; after intensive use speeds of just above 2000 are reached, whereas that used to be above 5000 rpm. That is not to say the machine is dead quiet now. But these last weeks I have grown accustomed to the quietness of my iBook, placed on a BookLift; the iMac is louder, but way more quiet than the departing plane it used to be.

Now I need to find a way to synchronize my files, somehow. The HD is still there, but many files have been updated on my iBook.

Good service, in any case.
