Exporting to Sony PSP/UMD

Hi Guys,

I wondered if anyone knew how to export video to Sony's PSP or to a UMD disk?

I was convinced I had seen PSP in an export to setction in one of my Mac apps, but now that I have my PSP I cant find it anywhhere!

There is software available for PC to PSP, just wondered if anyone has used anything for Mac to PSP.

Thanks in advance.

I am very happy with the OSX app PSPWare, which provides PSP syncing using a standard OSX interface. Just add iTunes or iPhoto files/folders to PSPWare and they are automatically put in the correct folder on the PSP, once the PSP is connected by USB.

Video also works well. Just go to the Movies pane of PSPWare, click the "+" and select a movie file. For example the 70 Mb BBC Motion Gallery HD video, is compressed to a 6.6 Mb movie for the PSP, and looks great. I have tried ripping a full length DVD movie, which compressed to 252 Mb for PSP, but would need a large capacity Memory Stick.

Hope that helps. 😉

Simon I don't use PSPWare but I believe that it does include the compression. Most if not all of these PSP apps. are actually GUI's over ffmpeg.

I've heard PSPWare is very good. I use iPSP and it works well too. I was using just the ffmpeg client and although there was a little more work you can have a bit more control.

You can find them and others here at VersionTracker.

Hi Ray,

Just tried using PSPWare which is great, but my DVD's are ripping to several vob files instead of a single large one.

Could I ask you what you used to rip your DVD's? Mactheripper splits it into 5 or 6 vobs, so if I could find something that does it into a single file that I can shrink with PSPWare and fit it onto my 1GB memory stick. Thanks for the help!

Nathan,

I usually pick a final output size of around 450 MB for a 2 hour movie. This allows it to fit on a 512 card with a little room left over for game saves or a few songs. For higher quality, I choose a final output size of around 900MB and put it on my 1GB card. The 450 MB movies are perfectly watchable and allow 2 movies per 1 GB card. I haven't tried to go any smaller than that, although it's possible.

I haven't tried to go any smaller than that, although it's possible.

But the smaller, the lesser quality.

Im having problems. I drag the Video_TS folder into HandBreak, and then the avi which it produces cannot play in quicktime. It takes almost 3 hours to go from Video_TS into the avi movie.

It would be real helpful if you could list the exact steps you take, and the approx time, for me and other readers.

For Video_TS folders, I don't convert to avi first via handbrake or others.

What I do for DVD's:

1. Mount DVD on desktop.
2. Open Forty-two DVDVX
3. Drag DVD to Forty_two window
4. Select Portable>>PSP
5. Hit start
6. The "Save As" dialog box that follows will have a space where you can enter your desired final file size.

This takes 3 hours or so with a mounted DVD, if the DVD has been ripped to your hard drive first it takes about 2 hours. Forty-two can be found at versiontracker or kaisakura.com

Thanks Edgar.

After all this, i have to take my PSP back tomorrow. When you switch it on, it should show the home screen, and network settings (1/1). Instead, mine shows the saved data utility screen (2/9). A small problem, but if the menu has a fault...im taking it back.

Thanks again for the help. Im gonna compare the ''mactheripper > handbreak > PSPWare > PSP'' with your method and see what i prefer. I'll never get UMD quality footage, but ill try my best.

Thanks again.
