Exporting to Sony PSP/UMD

Hi Guys,

I wondered if anyone knew how to export video to Sony's PSP or to a UMD disk?

I was convinced I had seen PSP in an export to setction in one of my Mac apps, but now that I have my PSP I cant find it anywhhere!

There is software available for PC to PSP, just wondered if anyone has used anything for Mac to PSP.

Thanks in advance.

Nathan,

I've owned a Japanese PSP since launch, and live here in the UK (Glasgow).

When you put the PSP to sleep mode (to turn it fully off you must hold the sleep slider switch to off for more than 3 seconds), it remains in the state you left it. So, if you put the PSP to sleep while looking at the Save Game Utility section then when you return the PSP from sleep mode, that's what you'll see. Same applies to a game. I've put PSP to sleep halfway through a lap of Ridge Racers, came back next day and turned it back on from sleep and it's on the Pause Menu where I left it.

I also recommend downloading the 2.0 Firmware update from the Japanese official site, it's easy enough to obtain and is universal. This allows the use of pictures on the Memory Stick to be used as desktop backgrounds amongst other things.

Have you tried holding the slider switch to off for longer than 3 seconds, forcing the unit OFF and not into SLEEP. When turning the unit back on from a full power down you will see the "Sony Computer Entertainment Present" screen then, if a UMD is in the machine, the "PSP - PlayStation Portable" screen. If no UMD is inserted, you will return to the Browser. There's nothing wrong with your PSP ... trust me.

End of.

Optimus,

Yes. I have shut it down properly. The Sony screen is displayed, i have reset the unit, tried diferent cards, and i have the 2.0 firmware tht came in the box. But still it will switch on to the saved data section of the home menu, instead of the network settings part of the menu.

There is a small fault in my menu, which i dont want to become a big problem. It just bugs me. Im gonna take it back today for a new unit.

Also, it took less that 3 hours to rip Jurassic Park with mactheripper, make an avi of it with handbrake and compress and sync it with PSPWare. AND its near UMD quality, all for 280MB, on my 1GB card.

Nathan;

There is NO default screen for the PSP to boot to. You're getting wound up over absolutely nothing and quite frankly, due to stock shortages you'll be lucky if they exchange the unit as there is nothing wrong with it.

Does it boot UMD movies and games?

Does it load save data from the Memory Stick?

Does all it's functions work (buttons, etc)?

If so, you don't have a leg to stand on because all you're being is borderline obsessive and far, far too touchy in YOUR demands of what PSP should boot to. My Japanese PSP has booted to the Save Data menu before ... how tragic. Press left, right, up, or down and move to whatever part of the browser you want it to.

I've owned one for 9 months, I know what I'm talking about. Your PSP is in perfect working order and quite frankly it should have a more deserving owner.

Oh, and I can assure you that you don't have a UMD quality rip of Jurassic Park at 280mb. It might look this way to the "naked eye" but I've got ripping DVD's to MP4 format down to an artform. The programs out there (3GP Convertor offers the highest bit-rate sampling) are best on PC for PSP conversion, but for DVD/UMD quality a movie is around 900mb. That's for full 30fps at highest bit-rate.

Sorry to sound obnoxious myself, but when you've had it for 9 months before anyone else knew where it's power button was, you tend to get that way.

Hmm...pre-ordering in April, tracking it since rumors were swirled back in spring 2003, buying most magazines with articles about it, fighting off the temptation to buy one last week when i was in LA, and waiting outside HMV at 11pm for the midnight launch.

Sure...i aint dedicated.

They swapped it. They had one saved for the HMV regional manager. Too late. They gave it me...i got it home....gulp! It happened again. Maybe just the 'PSP 1003 k' batch has a slight menu bug, which the next firmware should fix.

But hey i managed to get a nice accessory pack and a great leather case for ÂŁ9.99 whilst in store. Happy days.

Just a small point UMD discs are not recordable they are pressed like CD's.

The drive in the PSP is read only and there is no possible way to record data to a UMD in any way at all.

I use a piece of software called HandBrake to Rip DVD's to MP4 files.
These files if they are small enough can be put on to a PSP Memory Stick.
If you need to compress the files further you can use PSPWare (which I use to manage my PPS content)

HandBreak can do it all, but the files are large that it produces, if you change the quality settings I am sure you can make files smaller. I use PSPWare to make the files smaller for me and manage the transfer to the PSP.

I used Handbreak to rip Kill Bill 2 from DVD.

Handbreak produced a file that was 1.02GB

I then used PSPWare to compress that further to 328MB ready for the PSP.

On my iMac I find that HandBreak takes about the same time as the length of the film to rip, and then about 20 mins to compress in PSPWare.

Do you mean to rip from DVD to a Video_TS, or from a Video_TS to an AVI or the whole thing: DVD to AVI in the same time as the film length.

For me ripping Jurassic Park III, it took 25mins from DVD to Video_TS with M.T.R, then almost 3hours from Video_TS to AVI with handbreak.

Do you even rip to avi?

Nathan,

As I mentioned in my earlier posts, HandBrake produces an MP4 file from a DVD. You do have the option to create AVI if you like and that seems to take around the same time. So the process I use is as follows :-

HandBrake to convert a DVD to MP4 - this take about the same time as the length of the film on my 1.8 Ghz iMac.

The I drop the MP4 file into PSPWare and this converts it to a smaller MP4 file for the PSP, this can take about 20-30 mins.

You can probably manage without the PSPWare bit if you change the settings in HandBrake to produce a smaller MP4 file (as used by the PSP) and then manually copy it to the PSP.
