SIP Connection Errors

I've been having connection problems (i.e. can't ever connect via video/audio/screen-sharing) for several months now and I'm fed up - need a solution. 🙂

I've seem this same problem posted many times, but there's never a clear answer (despite Ralph's courageous attempts). Everything was working fine before (in 10.5.6), and out of the blue, everything just seemed to stop working. I upgraded to 10.5.7 thinking that perhaps it would refresh the iChat install, but no joy.

I've tried all of the common tricks (clamping the bandwidth, opening up the firewall, removing sys hacks, etc.) with no help. I get the same results while trying to connect to a remote user via AIM, with a LAN user via Mac.com, or with a LAN user directly via Bonjour.

I'm on a G5 Quad with an iSight, tons of RAM, a fast 6M/756k DSL pipe routing through a TimeCapsule with NAT port mapping on, and nothing else particularly weird installed in my system. Skype works fine, so this seems to be exclusively an iChat problem.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions. I'm a fairly savvy Mac user (21 years), but this one has me stumped and I REALLY don't want to do a clean install.

BTW, my laptop also seems to have this problem now, but I believe my kid's eMac can still audio/video chat just fine, which tends to rule out a problem with my router/modem (I'll verify this tomorrow and post a follow-up).

Here's my latest console dump from an audio chat test to appleu3test03 (everything but the binaries):

Ok,

I have seen one post today that had Error 7 with Internet Sharing ON.

I would look and check that it is Off.

If you are connected by Ethernet I would Disable/Turn off the Wifi item in System Preferences > Network.

Yes, Internet Sharing has been off for the previous tests. 🙂 I'm not sure why the logs still show that 192.068.2.x IP. I do have an ethernet cable plugged into the 2nd port, but the sharing pref is set to off. I'll try pulling it, but I'm really feeling that the problem is not with anything external to this CPU.

Thanks,

Hi,

It is odd that if System Preferences > Network has Off showing in the drop down that you are still getting this.

I would open Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities and Run the Disk First Aid Tab and Repair Permissions.

Ok,

It is not going to hurt.

Do it the Hard way and reinstall the two Support Folders as well and Don't forget to run the Combo Updater (listed at the bottom) afterwards so that everything gets updated properly.

Hi Ralph,

Here's what I did:

- Backed up iChat.app, all .plist files and both frameworks
- Re-installed iChat.app via Pacifist from Leopard DVD
- Tested iChat video (just in case) - no joy - same -8 error
- Re-installed the 2 frameworks as suggested
- Repaired permissions (from HD, not the DVD)
- Tested iChat video again - no joy
- Restarted
- Ran 10.5.7 combo updater to update iChat from 4.0 to 4.0.8
- Repaired permissions
- Restarted
- Tested iChat video - no joy - same error

ARGH!!! 😉

There must be something deeper in the OS net services that's fubar.

Ok,

As you deleted and Reinstalled and then tried before the COMBO delete all the iChat .plits in Your Home Folder/Library/Preferences

This will make the Start Up Screens appear but they should be pre-filled with your Info.

I haven't tried to take the G5 direct, but again, my daughter's eMac works just fine over WiFi through the TC, which I believe rules out the TC as being the problem. Besides, there's really nothing that could be changed in the TC to change the outcome, so I seriously doubt that it's the problem. This is further supported by the fact that the G5 used to work fine with the same setup. 🙂
