SIP Connection Errors

I've been having connection problems (i.e. can't ever connect via video/audio/screen-sharing) for several months now and I'm fed up - need a solution. 🙂

I've seem this same problem posted many times, but there's never a clear answer (despite Ralph's courageous attempts). Everything was working fine before (in 10.5.6), and out of the blue, everything just seemed to stop working. I upgraded to 10.5.7 thinking that perhaps it would refresh the iChat install, but no joy.

I've tried all of the common tricks (clamping the bandwidth, opening up the firewall, removing sys hacks, etc.) with no help. I get the same results while trying to connect to a remote user via AIM, with a LAN user via Mac.com, or with a LAN user directly via Bonjour.

I'm on a G5 Quad with an iSight, tons of RAM, a fast 6M/756k DSL pipe routing through a TimeCapsule with NAT port mapping on, and nothing else particularly weird installed in my system. Skype works fine, so this seems to be exclusively an iChat problem.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions. I'm a fairly savvy Mac user (21 years), but this one has me stumped and I REALLY don't want to do a clean install.

BTW, my laptop also seems to have this problem now, but I believe my kid's eMac can still audio/video chat just fine, which tends to rule out a problem with my router/modem (I'll verify this tomorrow and post a follow-up).

Here's my latest console dump from an audio chat test to appleu3test03 (everything but the binaries):

No, I'm still getting a slew of the <QCPatch errors when I try to initiate a video chat. 😟

SInce it's been a while, here's the latest iChat error dump, which still shows the From/To IPs mising:

is just hangs here in Terminal - I have to ctrl-c to get out.

Something is seriously wrong here if it's not even seeing my correct LAN IP. :/

Hi Mark,

The Log of the Chat does not resolve the IP And therefore the port of the rip (Remote IP)

AS you are saying the LAN IP shown in the Terminal Log is "wrong" it would seem you have to spend some time resolving your LAN.

Ralph,

That's just the problem. Before I followed all of your instructions to re-install iChat, it showed both IPs, the main, correct IP, and the other IP which is only used when I have Internet Sharing turned on (which it is not now).

There's nothing wrong with my LAN setup - there is some kind of corruption in the networking services here, which are now worse than before we started this thread.

Unless you can think of why iChat would be attempting to use the wrong IP when everything else in this system is functioning just fine (using the correct IP), then I guess I have no choice but to do a clean install of the OS.

Hi,

iChat is very fussy.

It does not like it when it can see two connections to the Internet.
Of course there are several way to create this.

Internet sharing on creates a Loop either through Parallels or another device. I have seen an iPhone shared this way to get it on the Internet and cause problems.

I once read of someone who had a Still Firewire Camera that was identified with an IP that did the same even though Internet Sharing was not On but there were two active Networks in System Preferences > Network.

System Preferences > Network can only display one IP if one Network is active.
It is possible to join one network with Ethernet and another with th Airport card. Or as you seem to have had at one stage a Second Ethernet card.

Now Network Preferences can "hold" an IP if something is using it and can be something that a Restart of the computer will sort out.

If I was getting a Strange IP I would look into it.

As 192.168.xxx.xxx where the xxx can be anything between 0 (or 1) and 524 (or 255) and are common on LAN devices I would look to see if something else is giving that IP.
If Wifi, it could be a Neighbour.

It could be a VPN given IP.

It is late here and it may be a while before I post again.

OK, I found this thread by googling "qcpatch photobooth", so this solution is not specific to iChat or networking, but to the use of the camera. It was related enough that I thought it was worth a post. On a new Macbook pro, with a user directory migrated from a 10.4 machine, I had a problem where photobooth initially seemed to work, then failed after taking a picture and did not save the picture. I did basic old school mac Preferences troubleshooting to isolate the culprit, which turned out to be . . .

com.apple.dock.db
com.apple.dock.plist

I have no idea why the dock has any relation to photobooth, but I verified this solution forward & reverse. I reactivated these two prefs and found that the problem returned. So, if you don't mind setting up your dock again, deleting these two files might help with photobooth/ichat camera issues.

Hi,

It may be that the whole Database and therefore .plist are corrupt.

It could be that deleting Photo Booth form the Dock re-writes the two enough to then re-add Photo Booth.

A link to the place you found the info could help.

I didn't look up the answer anywhere. This was just trial and error . . . pulling out user prefs, then logging out & in & testing. . . like we used to do in the old classic mac os. I found the googlable material in the console, but that produced only a thread from 2007 & Tiger that was closed and was ultimately related to third party cameras and/or video apps. This thread here is the only other useful information I found, so I had to find the solution for myself. It turns out that your understanding of the issue was correct. I put back the "bad" dock files and verified the error, then removed photobooth from the dock and the issue was resolved. . . simply by removing the icon from the dock. Adding the icon back into the dock did not reintroduce the problem.
