How Do I HIDE My IP Address?

Hi,

I really would like to know a good program to use (or buy) that will securely block my ip address. I don't want my address to show up in the stats for websites and blogs (so they wont know my location, etc).

Could someone please help.

Thanks

(please give straightforward answers 🙂

Hi,

The sad fact is that you cannot hide your IP.

The good news is that there are ways where you can "hide" your IP by connecting to the net through a router.

The simplest example is if you have a router at home which has an IP and you connect to it via a computer with another IP. You privet computer IP is kept inside the router and all your WAN (external) traffic holds your router IP.

The second way is to connect through external proxies. In this way you connect to a remote system (using a VPN for example) and this connection lets you connect to the net using its WAN connection.

I know it is not straightforward as you asked for, but its the shortest answer I could think of.

I hope this helps you,

Thanks Ziv...

I keep hearing about these proxies... which are the best? where can i "find" them? and are there any free reliable trustworthy secure free proxies?

And about the router? Do you mean if I have high-speed internet and I have a little box that gives me access to the net? with a company like at&t, or comcast, or bellsouth? if so then i assume i have a router... how would i go about connecting to the router with another ip? do you mean i could just make one up? or get one from somewhere else? if so, where could i get it?

then what would i do next? i know im asking alot of questions, but i love to know exactly what to do in "laymans" term 🙂

thanks in advance!

Answering you questions one at a time.

1. I don't know of any public proxy, but if you are a student in an university for example this can serve you.

2. If you have a router that your internal address (IPs) are separated from your external IP and although your router IP is public, no external computer can access your internal IP (unless your router is hacked). In general you can have whatever IP you want, but it is generally true that people use the 192.168.10.x or 10.0.0.x address ranges.

In the second case only your router gets a legal address and it has a feature which translate the proper packet's IP to its destination.

A Proxy or VPN or any other "tunnel" is a computer that you send all your internet traffic to before it goes out to the internet. All it does is fake it that your computer is on the same network as the proxy computer, and not reveal your current IP address to people. This is a safer way to browse and check email when you're on public networks such as wifi hotspots where you dont know who's running the internet connection. It can also prevent your current IP from being tracked, but unfortunately the proxy/VPN computer will be tracked. There are no real trustworthy public proxy and vpn servers, as these are usually set up by an institution for their clients (ie: schools and businesses) for secure connections. A public proxy kinda defeats the purpose. Therefore, your usage and IP address will be tracked, regardless of the use of proxies, since they will know the time of connection and the proxy IP, and ultimately there's a log on the proxy computer that you were the account logged in and using that IP at that time...etc, etc, etc...

And I ask all this, in part, because I have a blog and I am able to see the ip addresses of people, but then everyday or so I get a few people who have "blocked" or "private" ip addresses... and I want to know how they are doing it because I would like to do the same...

basically im saying that i know it can be dones, but does anyone have any idea on how to do it or what program to use... are there any inexpensive programs?

I know their are plenty for PCs but are there any programs for Macs?

You don't need a program, you need a router. All modern routers have NAT, Network Address Translation and convert your real IP into a local one.
You can ask your ISP to give you a dynamic IP so that each time you connect you have a new public IP address.
