Question

adding subtitles when converting for ATV

Is there a way to add a file with English subtitles when I convert a .avi file to mp4 for AppleTV?

macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6), iPhone, iPod, AppleTV, Time Capsule, iTunes 8

I haven't tried this app myself, but it may be of use to you. It's called Muxo and there's an article (and a link to the free download) here.

Thanks. I don't think these are quite right though. I have an avi file that I converted using Quicktime pro and there was an srt file with English subs that didn't get converted and that QT tells me is not a movie file. It seems like the file should be synced somehow. I watch movies on ATV rather than my iPod.

The way .avi does subtitles is with an extra file. For QuickTime (and ATV, iPod, etc.), the subtitle information is best stored IN the .mp4 file. The info page for iSubtitle states

+Supports all major subtitle file formats like SubRip (.srt), SubViewer 1 & 2 (.sub), SubStation Alpha and MicroDVD.+

What I THINK this means is that you feed the app your movie file and your .srt file and it combines them both into a single .mp4 file with a subtitle track. QuickTime Pro doesn't do this sort of conversion, iSubtitle does.

Hi

I ended up buying submerge which seemed similar but cheaper. But the next movie I tried had a different subtitle file than srt; it is idx and neither submerge or an unlicensed copy of isubtitle recognised it. Submerge did work for one film though. Thanks.
