Clicking link buttons on web-pages does not respond

Sometimes when i try to click buttons on web-pages, nothing happens. I don't know why this happens, as safari (version 4 beta) is still working, ie i can still open tabs etc and go on other websites which work perfectly fine. any clues?

Mac OS X (10.4.11)

I have the same issue. I was hoping that the 4.01 update and the Java update would fix it, but alas no.

Sites that don't work?

Most anything that invokes a JavaScript to open a new window. For example, clicking the Upload a File button in the file section of MobileMe.com The print a shipping label in www.ups.com. The browse to and upload a photo in www.yelp.com. All things that try to open another window on top of the current window. All fail. Click on the button or link and nothing happens. Safari works otherwise. no hang, no error, just no response to endless clicking.

As a clue to tracking this down, I use Speed Download. If I click on a Download Link and Speed Download is not already launched and running, clicking the download link will not launch Speed Download and add the download to the queue. If Speed Download is running, clicking on the download link or icon in Safari will pass the download request to Safari and it will work.

I remain convinced that there is a bug in Safari. Your post reporting the exact same symptoms on a completely different computer confirms that the problem is not with my unique setup but with Safari and how it interacts with Mac computers in a real world environment, where there are third party apps and add-ons. I am sure that this problem doesn't affect everyone and certainly doesn't show up on a "pure vanilla" all Apple installation.

I have NONE of these problems in Firefox, it just works. I will give Safari credit for rendering faster that Firefox, but it I can't click on a link and get it to respond, then the Safari browser is useless. Because there is no work around or menu shortcut or contextual menu that will get it to work.

I'm having this problem as well, but for me, it only occurs on 1 of the 3 Macs I regularly use. All are running the most recent updates to the OS, Safari, Java, etc., and the problem only manifested since installing having installed Safari 4.

On the affected machine, any time I try to click a button that is meant to call a new window (for example an "Upload" button that would normally bring up a file-browser with which to select my uploads), nothing happens.

I'm glad to see that I'm not alone, but this bug is seriously annoying..

I'm having the same problem and my MacBook is currently in an all-Mac "vanilla" state. After 3 years, I've just had most of the computer parts replaced (new logicboard, RAM, top case, sleep-sensors and case around the monitor, Airport, etc.) and a complete reinstall of the OS. I have yet to replace all the data backed up on my external hard drive, so it's like having a new machine.

When I click on "Empty" next to the spam button in yahoo mail -- nothing. Tried selecting all the messages (ok) and clicking "Delete" -- nothing. The kicker is that I'm running Safari 3.0.4 since I haven't yet installed all the updates. So it may not be Safari 4 specific.

When I asked the guy at the genius bar whether the newer machines are better than my clunker he shrugged evasively. This is not encouraging news, Apple!!!

With each new version of safari, I have hopes this will be fixed but no. I love many things about safari, but having to right click and choose "open in new tab" because safari doesn't work for a particular web link is maddening. Some example sites where certain links don't work. Many of the yahoo pages, google reader, ebay, etc. These are popular sites and work with every other browser that I've tried.
