How Big can a Pismo Hard Drive accommodate?

Have a 40 gig hard drive, and am going to upgrade. Contacted a company and they recommended a 320 gig drive. Bought it, but when installed, it only read as 128 gigs. Called the company, and they said the Pismo can only accommodate up to a 120 gig drive. Is this accurate? Thanks. David

David,

There is no question the Pismo's internal HD can be no larger than 128GB. The BootROM in the Pismo cannot see beyond 128GB, i.e. you cannot use any of the HD beyond 128GB.

There is a third-party utility named SpeedTools that does allow use of larger HDs but the HD must still be partitioned near 128GB. Please read all of the details and limitations of this utility.

If your FireWire enclosure saw only 120GB of a 320GB HD, you may have an older FireWire enclosure that needs a firmware update. This was a limitation of FireWire enclosures years ago when larger HDs appeared. I believe the firmware update allows 48-bit addressing instead of just the 24-bit. You may have to buy a new FireWire enclosure if there is no firmware update.
