removing echo/room noise

I have an interview taken in a kitchen which, as a result, has some echo like qualities. Also, the door in the kitchen was open, and I didn't realize that the sounds of the nearby highway would be so distracting. So, with the echo and the highway noise, there is a lot of other noise going on besides the the dialogue of the person being interviewed.

I did a noise reduction but it really didn't help much; it made the audio sound tin-like.

Does anyone know how to reduce such noise???

You need to post this in the Sound track pro forum, final cut pro is limited to audio cleanup. Final cut wont be able to help you.

If you have access to Soundtrack Pro you can do some editing there that might help. Although you can 'send' the audio track with issues to Soundtrack directly, I make an .iff file copy of the audio track and open it up independently in Soundtrack.

Select a section of the audio track that only has the ambient sound (street, noise, etc) but no voice. Under Process>Noise Reduction>Set Noise Print you can Soundtrack what is the noise you want to try and eliminate in the whole track.

Then you can select the entire track, do Process>Noise Reducation>Reduce Noise and see if that helps.

There are many other functions under Process>Effects that can help as well. I'll usually do a trial and error process, but you can monitor the results in real time and save that modification as a preset, then use it again in other parts of the interview.

I did do noise reduction, as well as reverberation to try and control echo and room noise. The raw version sounds better though. When I did noise reduction with other effects the voice lost clarity. I posted in the FCP forum because I thought someone might have knowledge of a helpful device in FCP or could recommend another program for audio restoration.
