SMC Update killed my computer!!

I just downloaded and installed the smc update from automatic updates. However, when the computer restarted it remained with a blank screen for 20 minutes. I tried to restart it but now the bottom power light under the track pad lights for a second and nothing happens. The computer seems dead now. I have everything disconnected and tried resetting the SMC, but to no avail.

Please help!

Does anyone know how to get Apple to respond to this? I was amazed to find the SMC upgrade still downloading in my latest updates.

I HAVE NOT INSTALLED IT.

APPLE MUST RESPOND. THIS IS CRAZY.

I have been to the support page but there in nowhere you can leave a general "THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE" message, nor is there anyone you can call.

Can someone who has an Apple store in their city go and show this thread to the manager and stir up some action.

What about the top users listed on this thread, do you know what to do??

I agree with comments that Apple should accept "mea culpa." I find it unconscionable that Apple continues to offer this update in its list of available downloads. The least they could do is to provide a warning that it may be harmful to your computer's health so, like smoking, one can make an informed decision about whether to take the chance.

I can forgive Apple for thinking that a complicated program is bug free, only to have problems show up once in use. I understand this particular update is one of the largest files ever, and it would actually be more surprising if a bug or two weren't present. What I can't forgive is their not removing the update as soon as major problems were reported, so others could avoid further aggravation.

If this update is so large, I wonder if some of the problems have to do with download speed. Do those on FIOS have more success than those with slower modems? I also wonder if all the problems have been on a laptop, or have some of you out there had a problem on an Intel Pro desktop as well?

If you haven't checked out non-Apple forums, one in particular offers wise advice about steps to take to protect against download problems: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/OSX/OSX_10_5_7reports.html

I have received two emails that seem to be from someone at Apple, thanking me for my participation in the Apple Forum. Has anyone else received one of these? If they really are from an Apple representative, it would seem the list is at least monitored. So why don't they do something about it?

I wanted to give an update. My MBP was returned this week. The local Apple Store accepted the repair at no charge even though the machine was out of warranty. The logic board, screen, and screen connector were replaced. I notice that the machine was returned with the previous firmware installed. I'm too afraid to re-apply the firmware. If I was to re-apply it, I think I'll make an appointment at the Apple Store Genius Bar and ask them to witness the reinstall (and any issues arising).

the update did not killed my macbook pro 3,1 but it makes so much trouble. in my case my usb devices are not working as before - my wacom is not recognized anymore. i lost two working days with installing reinstalling clearing of caches and smc and **** ... this is not included with my apple care plan i think. my first mac has been a pb 100 - never ever i have experienced something like that. maybe they borrowed some managers from microsoft ... apple! care! take this update off horor offline and do something good - which means a new and working smc/efi update fast please!

One thing though, is the reason that they did all of that work out of warranty because your computer failed the NVIDIA test? They told me that if they could have got mine to boot far enough to fail the test they would have replaced the board for free under the extended warranty for the NVIDIA chip issues they had in these boards. I'm pretty sure at this point I'm screwed out of a lot of money. I haven't heard anything back in the last two weeks and I seriously doubt they will. If I could get some more information from those who did get their machines repaired for free then that would give me something to go on.

Was it related to the NVIDIA problem?
Did they repair it for free?
Case Number or Repair number?

Any other information you might have that might in any way be helpful.

sorry but this is a "me too" post - my "Genius" tells me my 18th month old logic board is dead.

MBP is completely dead apart from light on front and "Genius" was adamant that the graphics card was not the problem

He then immediately tried to sell me a new MacBook, not really what I wanted to hear and a little to quick for my liking before really trying to resolve my problem.

Starting to get depressed with my Apple experience: in our business we have: original iMac, iMac G4, iMac G5, iBook & PowerMac G4 - all still working perfectly HOWEVER, the newer Macs (TWO) G5's and now the MBP have all failed within 2 - 3 years

Is there a pattern here with newer Macs becoming less reliable?

I'm awaiting a call from my Apple Store business manager to hopefully work out a solution to my MBP issue - I'll report back!

As I mentioned before my machine appears dead.. except for the light glowing.
I decided that I would try logging in anyway and sure enough I could turn volume up and down and I could hear error announcements when I would try to navigate around by memory but without any luck.
After using T mode again the screen started to work. I won't shut it down now and it's been on for almost a week straight. I have to much work to do right now to send it in so I will just hope for the best. When I do drop it in I will let you know what happens.

These are not coincidences. A colleague, two doors down from me, brought her dead MBP in to my office today. Exactly the same symptoms as me (not booting, flashing file icon with ? in the middle). The Applecare guy suggested she took a screwdriver to her machine, undo the screws holding the drive and tighten it again (she hasn't, and is going to take it in instead). There's no issue of our common MBP 'deaths' being caused by dodgy electrics in Camden, as my MBP was east coast USA when it died, and her's was in the UK. Neither of us can get an appointment at the Genius bar. Great.

Hi.
I've not installed the SMC update yet (fortunately I read this discussion...).
But.. I had a similar problem in April.
I've the first SantaRosa MBP (july 2007).

In April my father was working with iMovie.. I worked all the day..
At 7 PM, when I came back from university, I decided to do a reboot...
Well... it switched off correctly, but.. at boot it didn't light-up the monitor... But the notebook was alive... The HD was working, and using spotlight I turned on iTunes and played some songs..
The DVI exit was dead too so I could not use a secondary monitor...

I brought my mac 2 day after to an Apple repair center (in Italy we don't have Genius..).
In 2 days they changed the logic board and the vga (it was the nvidia problem)..

Had a similar problem with the firmware update.

Effects:
1. the notebook is much warmer then before
2. no standby - when closing the cover it stays on, heats itself, gets hot. When opening the cover again there is no way to stop it - no mouse, no keyboard, had to push the power button and restart.

Just tried to send a bug report to apple. When clicking on the "submit" button all I got was another error message on the web page telling me to report the error to apple. 😟

Very frustrating!!!

I had problems with my computer after the SMC update, luckily it was caused by Nvidia. Apple is currently replacing it at no charge. I'll have it back in 3-5 days. Funky experience with the Apple Store. I made an appointment online and went to the genius bar and waited. Apparently I was supposed to sign in at the front of the store, even though no where online or the email said it. I ended up having to wait for an extra hour to be helped. Though the tech guy I had was very professional and polite.
