I agree with comments that Apple should accept "mea culpa." I find it unconscionable that Apple continues to offer this update in its list of available downloads. The least they could do is to provide a warning that it may be harmful to your computer's health so, like smoking, one can make an informed decision about whether to take the chance.
I can forgive Apple for thinking that a complicated program is bug free, only to have problems show up once in use. I understand this particular update is one of the largest files ever, and it would actually be more surprising if a bug or two weren't present. What I can't forgive is their not removing the update as soon as major problems were reported, so others could avoid further aggravation.
If this update is so large, I wonder if some of the problems have to do with download speed. Do those on FIOS have more success than those with slower modems? I also wonder if all the problems have been on a laptop, or have some of you out there had a problem on an Intel Pro desktop as well?
If you haven't checked out non-Apple forums, one in particular offers wise advice about steps to take to protect against download problems:

I have received two emails that seem to be from someone at Apple, thanking me for my participation in the Apple Forum. Has anyone else received one of these? If they really are from an Apple representative, it would seem the list is at least monitored. So why don't they do something about it?
