SMC Update killed my computer!!

I just downloaded and installed the smc update from automatic updates. However, when the computer restarted it remained with a blank screen for 20 minutes. I tried to restart it but now the bottom power light under the track pad lights for a second and nothing happens. The computer seems dead now. I have everything disconnected and tried resetting the SMC, but to no avail.

Please help!

Macbook pro would not boot light on front and hardrive noise but nothing on screen...
So i took it to apple store and got seen by the head genius (hmmm).

And because it wont boot and they have the diagnostics to see if it is the graphics chip on a usb drive he could not confirm that because it cant read/start the drive... and told me he could do nothing and it would be a new logic board and cos i am out of warranty and applecare it would be £700.

Morning!

So i took it to the "mac and pc centre" manchester a certified reseller service centre for a second opinion and see if they could repair for less...

So they confirmed the logic board needed changing but they asked apple if i could be done under warranty and apple said thats fine so its here after 2 days in the shop all repaired...i am happy...

Still gonna get a mac pro soon though..

Cheers.. woop woop

Hi,
I've the same problem of the NVidia Geforce 8600M GT which is not found by the system any more after a sleep. Everything else works fine, because I can run it from remote display.
I've reinstalled the system, repeated PRAM and SMC reset a few times, without success

A similar problem was solved a few months ago on this MBP by SMC reset (before the end of the 2 years of warranty provided by applestore), but now it does not power up the framebuffer (it is now 2 years + 1 month old, and without AppleCare). So it is not late to notify the problem, according to the european law, but Apple refuse to consider this problem as a defect

The support center has tested (probably from usb) the system, and Nvidia seems to work fine, but they said the logic board is broken. I'm writing connected to the broken MBP from another MBP, so everything works except the start of NVidia

I think this is a defect of these machines, but when I asked to open a request to Apple for this defect (Consumer Law repair Validation), they said that this is not a manufacturing problem that (latently) existed from the time of delivery, so ....I'm simply out of warranty

I'm also not included in the program which extend the warranty for NVidia Geforce 8600M GT problems, because the framebuffer can complete the NVidia test successfully.

I think this is not a complete test, because they do not to verify the connection between logic board and this broken set of framebuffers.

The apple authorized center asked too much money to fix it (870 euro + tax), so it's now, broken, at home

I can add that the previous powerpc computers where much better (still perfect after 6 years!)
I hope unibody is really unbreakable, otherwise Apple will loose a lot of customers

For a couple of months I've used my MBP 15" with the broken NVidia Geforce 8600M GT only via remote vnc connection.
Yesterday I decided to update it from a remote mac using the Snow Leopard update dvd, but after the first reboot the monitor was still blank and remote connection was not working.
So I switched off the computer and after reboot the monitor was working fine, and so I completed the installation.
I recommend everybody to upgrade to Snow Leopard as soon as possible, because it could fix your computer

I also installed Snow Leopard and now the screen is working. However, this also happened after I installed 10.5.8 update for leopard. But then after three restarts the screen stopped working again.

Now I am keeping this laptop on at all times. Unfortunately there's 10.6.1 out already and I'm a bit uneasy about installing it since it requires a restart...

Have you restarted and/or put to sleep the machine? And if yes, how many times?
