EyeTV DTT Stick Won't Install

I just bought the Elgato EYETV DTT Stick today and have tried installing it without success. I get to the point where it asks me to plug it into a USB 2.0 and then I can't click on 'next'. I've looked in the 'About this Mac' menu at what USB things are connected and it doesn't show up there.
I've tried it on a PC and the PC recognises that it's plugged in. I've tried it on another Mac and it also doesn't recognise that it's plugged in. I've tried turning my Mac off and restarting it and unplugging the EYETV but nothing seems to work. Anybody else had this probelm???? Maybe it's just a faulty one that I got???

They tried the first one in their Mac and not even the CD that came with it would work for them. They figured the first one was just a dodgy one so they didn't try the new one they gave me.
Will take it back this week. I just thought there might be someone else out there in Mac World who had experienced the same problem.

No drivers are necessary under Osx, however the software installs an application called Eyetv which is the viewer/recorder and allows you to choose to use a single arial or two arial inputs on diversity models.

In system profiler you need to be looking for an item on the USB High-Speed bus with a Vendor ID by Hauppauge Computer Works, Inc.

(These are the real manufacturers and their range of WinTV devices marketed at the PC market arena Identical- however don't include the Osx viewer application as standard)

Contrary to myth Elgato range are NOT firmware locked to Osx and will actually work in Windows XP and later with the correct driver and software available free from the Hauppauge support site as well.
I digress however.

*Fault diagnose.*

You have either a software or hardware problem.

Lets start with the hardware you say that when plugged into a PC USB socket the Windows device recognices and launches the New Hardware found wizard however this could be a red herring as all this tells me is that the PC USB port is working so put this aside.

Right back at your mac plug the dongle (WIth NO TV cables attached) into any available USB port (For this experiment you CAN use a Hub or even your keyboard socket and can be USB 1.1 or 2.0)

Now go to the system profiler and look for a device with Vendor ID by Hauppauge Computer Works, Inc.
If its seen then Osx Is recognizing the devices existence -OKAY

Now move the device to a known USB2.0 socket on the back of your Mac and try again.
Do you STILL see It in Profiler ? YES/No

If no try another USB2.0 socket again YES/No -Try all the available sockets in turn.

All the above steps are with the dongle plugged DIRECTLY into the MAC and you should NOT use the short armored extension cable supplied in the kit.

You should have got a YES if all is well however there is a known problem with the dongle and that is the weight and length mean that it doesn't always make a good connection in horizontal USB sockets (add a Coax and it worse).

So next introduce the armored extension cable -Should now get a yes -IF not then there is a problem with either dongle and/or cable- At this point pack up and return goods to supplier for a replacement.

Now assuming we have got a YES and have a dongle connected to a USB2.0 socket directly or via the armored extension socket let move on to the software.

Launch to Eye TV software installer from the disc and work through the wizard.
When you get to the country screen set accordingly to you country (This is for the built-in Viewing guide)

Click next and in the Choose Hardware window set _THIS STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT as this sets the correct controls for your dongle.
The top should say Elgato and in the bottom use the pull-down menu to choose select and set the *Correct Device*.
Click next enter name and disc code.

The next window depends on the dongle model chosen select the input method to suit your situation.
Antenna (Coax), Cable (Coax either the traditional bayonet or screwed variety)
If you have a dual tuner version you can also set up for one or two inputs (One is needed per tuner)
However in the fault diagnoses stage I RECOMMEND you set this to ONE antenna for now.

Click through the rest of the wizard.

Depending where you are you will also be offered a subscription to a regional TV guide for one year.
You can sign up or not its up to you.

Next click to the Auto-Tune Channels window-Make sure you choose the correct system for your region NTSB/PAL etc. (Don't auto tune yet)
Click next and finish.
That’s it!

FInally connect the COAX cable(s) to the dongle and launch the EyeTV application.
(At this point the weight on the dongle become an issue again so try using the extension cable to reduce this.
You may have to make a compromise on quality here as the extension cable whilst armored noticeably still increases interference risk)

Click on the Window menu and choose EyeTV programs.

Go to the Channels Menu in left hand finder like window and Click on the Auto-Tune radio button and off it goes to scan for available channels.

One thing NEVER bother with the tiny arial supplied but connect to a proper source. Preferably external arial, cable or to a coax out/through port on a satellite receiver.

Hi,

I am having the same issue. I live in Australia so my stick is different to yours. I plug it into a powered spot and the look it up under system profiler. It is named as 'HOOK', i don't know what this means. I have run the installer many times and on another mac as well. It is still doing the same thing. I get to the part where it asks me to plug in my eyetv. I do this, however, the next button doesn't illuminate. I have waited for hours hoping that it will magically begin working, however, it does not. I tried this on both the firmware on the disc provided and the updated version. Please guys any help is good help.

I am still trying to communicate with the people from elgato about how i can fix it. My old one stopped working so i got it replaced, which took some time. I eventually get the new one and it still doesn't work. Is this a coincidence or just really bad luck. If i return it and the next one is still not working then i know that there must be something wrong with my own computer, i have no idea what.

Hi it's drino,

I have just finished talking to the fantastic staff at elgato about this issue. They told me to install there new beta. To do this you must have eyetv running. Then open this link in your browser. eyetv://checkforupdates?build=4925
This should start the the update process. Once it is done your mac should be able to recognize the device and finish the installation process. It should be working fine now.
Hope this works as it did for me. If not get in contact with the people at elgato support.
