I can't say from personal experience, but you'll find several choices for OS X at versiontracker.com and macupdate.com.
You might check out
MacSword which is based on the open source
Sword Project.
It's free so if it's not exactly what your after you won't be out anything. I'm not sure if it allows you to use the add-on modules of the Sword Project but if so it would seem to be very compelling to use.

1.) Logos Bible Software (www.logos.com) is good for both a general and academic audience.
2.) I personally like Accordance (I'm a philosophy/theology teacher part-time) because of the strength of the Greek/Hebrew tools (www.accordancebible.com)
3.) Bibleworks is a PC-only program, but it's solid, and it works well with Virtual PC (www.bibleworks.com).
Some programs have a more "layman" emphasis, while others contain more scholarly tools. It all depends what you're looking for.
Best wishes!

Try Quickverse. The only down side is that it doesn't include the NIV. Otherwise it seems to work well. It looks like a modern app that has a future.
I also went with Accordance - really nice and full featured - the different modules (translations) are real nice too - great for my Wife and my Bible Studies.
My suggestion would be to actually read the Bible and keep an open, critical mind. I think you'll find it a very different book than they're talking about in church.

I know this isnt the forum for this, but since you broached the topic:
1.) You assume that he doesn't already read the Bible. He's making a request regarding supplemental tools, which doesnt replace a reading of the primary text.
2.) You also assume he doesn't have an open, critical mind.
3.) You assume that there is a univocal ecclesial interpretation. Who are "they"? What do you mean by "very different"? Which church do you have in mind? Be specific. Such generalities arent helpful.
I know this doesn't add any further info to his question, but yours didn't exactly either. Sorry, but I didn't find your response either open or critical.
The purpose of an open mind is the same as an open mouth--to close it on something solid. G.K. Chesterton

well said.
You're correct, this isn't the place. However:
1. My apologies for lumping Mr. Schroeder with the great majority of folks who have not read the Bible start to finish, he may well in fact have.
2. Ditto the above.
3. My best answer to "they" would be the ministers and priests Jefferson was referring to in his "Eternal Hostility" letter to Dr. Rush.
IMHO, a well rounded person would want to study both sides of the Bible question, possibly by reading Robert Ingersol, Thomas Paine, Steve Allen, or Bruce Chilton. I freely admit this was not part of the original question.
