1.) Logos Bible Software (www.logos.com) is good for both a general and academic audience.

2.) I personally like Accordance (I'm a philosophy/theology teacher part-time) because of the strength of the Greek/Hebrew tools (www.accordancebible.com)

3.) Bibleworks is a PC-only program, but it's solid, and it works well with Virtual PC (www.bibleworks.com).

Some programs have a more "layman" emphasis, while others contain more scholarly tools. It all depends what you're looking for.

Best wishes!

I know this isn’t the forum for this, but since you broached the topic:

1.) You assume that he doesn't already read the Bible. He's making a request regarding supplemental tools, which doesn’t replace a reading of the primary text.

2.) You also assume he doesn't have an “open, critical mind.”

3.) You assume that there is a univocal ecclesial interpretation. Who are "they"? What do you mean by "very different"? Which church do you have in mind? Be specific. Such generalities aren’t helpful.

I know this doesn't add any further info to his question, but yours didn't exactly either. Sorry, but I didn't find your response either open or critical.

You're correct, this isn't the place. However:

1. My apologies for lumping Mr. Schroeder with the great majority of folks who have not read the Bible start to finish, he may well in fact have.

2. Ditto the above.

3. My best answer to "they" would be the ministers and priests Jefferson was referring to in his "Eternal Hostility" letter to Dr. Rush.

IMHO, a well rounded person would want to study both sides of the Bible question, possibly by reading Robert Ingersol, Thomas Paine, Steve Allen, or Bruce Chilton. I freely admit this was not part of the original question.
