Macbook Pro, wireless issues

Hey everyone, I've been wanting to jump onto the apple bandwagon since the release of OSX. A few weeks ago I went ahead and purchased a unibody 2.4Ghz MBP from the apple refurb store. It arrived, everything worked great.. Until now.

Tonight, I can only barely connect to my wireless network. I am using a Linksys WRT-54G with the DD-WRT firmware (wireless works fine with my netbook and iPod touch). It was working fine with my macbook and then tonight I can hardly get a connection if one at all. It will show a full strength connection, but everything is bordering on unusable.

Webpages won't load, can't even access my router's config page. I first thought it was an issue with my ISP but at the same time my macbook has the issues I can walk over to my desktop and it's connection is fine. I can't really afford to have a $1,700 machine that can't get online (unless I reboot into windows like I am now typing this).

There has to be a way to fix this, or at least narrow it down to what the problem might be.

Thanks!

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.7)

Another data point:
On a recent version MacBook Pro, I will:

1. Loose internet connection, but Airport in the Menu Bar says it is still connected to my network.
2. Network diagnostics says there are problems with the Network Configuration.
3. Opening Airport Utility, no AES base stations can be seen, even though Airport in the Menu Bar says I'm still connected (full strength) to my network.
4. Renewing DHCP lease does not help.
5. Resetting PRAM and turning off IPv6 has not helped.
6. Turning Airport off and then on again solves the network and router visibility problem.

Wife's Core2Duo MacBook Pro does not have this problem.

I would just like to add to this discussion that I had an issue with my MBP (mid 2009) not being able to connect to the internet through my belkin n1 router even though my ipod touch and PC were fine. After countless hours trying to figure it out I came to a solution that might help some people. I changed my security setting of my router from WAP to no security at all. This fixed the connection issue for my MBP. This might not be ideal for some of you as anybody can use your wifi but I have also stopped broadcasting my SSID. The next thing I will try as somebody has mentioned is try to use WAP2. Will let you know how this goes.

@darell

Your workaround didn't help. Thanks for your item.
Anyhow I didn't buy an Apple to handle it like a PC!
My MBP 13" was brandnew and I had to install the OSX 3 times, since the migration did not work.
So all caches were empty at this time.
My server still drops, it's not only the wifi or internetconnection.

Wayting for an reaction of Apple!

Hi everybody, I had the same problem, dropped connections, and if I closed the MBP and then opened it again, I had to wait forever for it to reconnect. I was using Verizon DSL with their modem and my Netgear router. DSL was slow when I saw what others were doing on a cable connection. So I decided to switch to Verizon FIOS to get the faster speed. I signed up for the "Triple Play", internet, TV and phone. They came and installed it all (took 8 hours), they replaced the modem with their FIOS unit which is the modem and router all in one. I've had it since July 23rd and I am so happy I made the switch. MY MBP flies now, no dropped connections, I can close the MBP and when I open it, I am immediately connected. The signal is very strong, much stronger than with the Netgear. The Verizon tech said it has a range of 300 feet, and I believe it. He also put security on it so my neighbors can't connect. If any of you are wired in your neighborhood for FIOS, check it out, it could be a good deal for you. They also offer incentives for the TV, free Showtime for 2 years, free HBO for several months, a free FLIP camcorder or a Netbook laptop, check it out.

Here's my update, since my post after receiving my MBP back from warranty service with a brand new wireless card (and optical drive. My really good buddy who works at the apple store was coming by, so for kicks, I asked him to bring his MBP which is 6 months older than mine and he claims has no issues at his house with wireless speed. Side by side at my house (keeping in mind that all other PCs, iphones, ipod touch, and apple tv work fine) his MBP worked perfectly with my network "as is" mine he noted was so bad that he would have thrown it out the window within the hour. He took it home with him, and noted that at his house it was decent and it was fine at the apple store where he had 3 techs run extensive diags. No issues found. Here's my conclusion -- it comes back to a reception issue -- that must be tied to the particular type of wireless card I have installed in my machine. I would bet that he has some slightly different card installed as does anyone who has never had a speed issue with their MBP. I bet they replaced my old card with the exact same model (maybe even a refurbed card). Why does my Mac work decently at his house and at the apple store? Proximity to the wireless access point. My MBP works decently (sometimes) if I am right next to my WAP. I would bet the installed wireless card is also really sensitive to other transmissions too, I am no engineering expert though. I am pretty much convinced that I bought a brick, and don't have the energy to pursue this any further. The MBP was supposed to be the portal to me switching fully to Mac. That's not happening. Also...who designed the Apple TV without an off switch if they knew it would heat up to 1000 degrees if you don't unplug it? Fast to market, first to disappoint consumers. If the iphone wasn't decent, I would be totally turned off. But then again, competition is catching up fast on the iphone....

I would have to same I getting pretty frustrated. I am a tech and my boss has just bought 2x new MBP. They are both suffering from these exact symptoms - in addition to my personal MBP which i purchased not 2 months ago. At home mine seems to work fine but in the office with several other wireless networks I would have to say that I feel interference is a part of this. I took mine into a Genius Appointment - he could see it was having trouble in the Console Logs (filter Airport string). His answer was to delete my 'airport.plist' which has only seemed to make it worse. It will no longer join 'Known Networks'. My Airport Extreme, at work, is in my server room. It is small and when I am in the room I can get connection to it for maybe 40 minutes or so - then it seems to drop. But out in the office I last connected about 10 minutes if that - and then cant reconnect. I agree - it would seem Apple have used a new airport card and or firmware perhaps and its really not dealing with anything at all very well!!

Apple you are sadly disappointing a Loyal Customer and follower!
