Mac New iMac: First Impressions

Okay, for those of you who care, here's my first impressions of my new iMac G5 2.1 GHZ. This is my fifth iMac, so I'm pretty imbedded into the performance of this brilliant machines.

1.) I have one dead pixel on the screen...just one. It's small, most people wouldn't notice, but my eyes keep focusing on the imperfection and it's in the dead center of the screen. Should I exchange it just for that?

2.) It's quiet! No, I mean it's really quiet. My last '20 iMac 2GHZ was subtly noisier that this one. I hear the hard drive from time to time and that's it. Whisper quiet is not just an Apple cliche.

3.) I'm not sure how .1 GHZ makes a difference but it's zippier, yes, you'll notice. Maybe it's the memory, I dunno.

4.) World of Warcraft is no better on my last one that this one, I tried to up the default graphics settings to a little bump up...choppy. So, those of you wanting to switch just on the sheer fact there's a new video card in it "PCI-Express (say with an echo)", forget about it. I can't say I'm disappointed too much as for years Apple never gave it the graphics cards it should have, now it finally does. Still, it's not up to moderate gamer specs.

5.) Photo Booth - Big Deal

6.) Front Row - Totally Cool. Thanks Apple, this one was a well thought (or copied) idea.

7.) The smell - Nothing smells better than a new Mac. Just that heating up and smell of plastics....ah, you can't pay for a better bottled smell.

8.) iSight - Yeah, the camera has improved. I would say it's noticible different than my old iSight which magnetically hung on the top of my old mac. Another great innovation.

Well, that's it. Hope I didn't bore you too much or step on any toes. If you have any other questions let me know. Also, give me your opinion about the dead pixel. I just know those people at CompUSA are going to look at my like I'm on crack complaining about one dead pixel. Still, when I resell in 8 months and the eBay buyer asks, "Are there any dead pixels", I rather not say "Yeah, one, right in the dead center of the screen" Take care.

I got a question for world of warcraft.

What setting were you playing the game in? Reso? Did you have everything full blast for the options?

Also, how much ram do you have in your imac? You aren't suppose to be getting choppyness if I'm not mistaken if you have at least 1 gig of ram. Of course there will always be times when it chugs (I know that dwarf town (can't remeber the name) with the pit and auction house was always a b ** to enter on my old notebook).

Hi Barton,
Welcome to the Discussions!

So you bought it from a shop?
Then I would go back there and gently/politely/calmly explain the situation. You know very well that the usual exchange number is five dead pixels, but you know very well also that the CENTER OF THE SCREEN is a crucial place where it is very understandable that the "five dead pixels rule" would apply.
Don't you seem to remember a colleague or somebody on the Apple Discussions who had his Mac exchanged just for this very reason?
I'm pretty sure most of the staff in the shop will agree with you on that.

Enjoy your new Mac!
Axl

Just got my new iMac yesterday.
No "obvious" dead pixels--no hot pixels.
Quiet, yes. But I can hear the fan running in the bottom left corner...
Better video performance--no "stop and go" when using the Visualizer in iTunes.
Photo Booth--my (college age) kids love it!
Front Row--is totally cool, but can be a bit slow at times.

After twenty years of Macs--this is my first iMac, and so far, I'm very pleased.

I've had my Imac for 4 months now - 1st Gen and the fans do rev up and get louder than I like but still love it. My G4 was probably just as noisy but it sits farther away from me so I didn't notice it as much. Thought about selling this one to get a newer one but decided not to. I could care less about photobooth and Frontrow. I own a 50" DLP HD Television and watch all my movies on that - much nicer 🙂

I purchased my 20" iMac Isight today from The Regent Strreet store , London. One of only 12 they have recieved since announced on the 12/13 oct.

I must say its looking nice, still a slight buzz from left hand corner but silence from the top, differentiating it from the A and B problems encountered by some.

Need to sort some memory upgrade, 512mb is a bit cheeky, it needs the ram for the extra woomph, upgrading from 1.8 up to 2.1ghz has made a large difference... now will get some ram tommoro i hope...

More soon.

New mac smell emitting now lol

I've been tinkering with a little concept for a little while, and I think it's time to bring it to the masses: if any of you are familiar with the PSP, there have been some fixes for stuck pixels, usually with a 70% success rate.

I've created a similar fix for the Mac called rapidFire. rapidFire is a simple QuickTime movie, that if successful, should eliminate any "stuck" pixels on your screen. By rapidly displaying red, green, blue and white colors on your screen, the capacitors that control a "stuck" pixel should begin to work properly again.

This movie is based off a popular solution for "stuck" pixels on Sony's Play Station Portable. Users report a 60-80% success rate with these units. While I haven't thoroughly tested rapidFire, it should not cause any damage and will not void your Warranty or Apple Care Protection Plan coverage. That said, it's offered AS IS, with no warranty implied.

I have always fought hard to get replacements even for one bad pixel. One time I even went so far to bring my PB 17" in to Apple Japan's headquarters in Opera City!

I'm glad I did. I can't stand dead pixels!

If you keep at them and don't give up they will eventually take care of you.

Some people seem to be very tolerant of them. But if you aren't, I would definitely try to get that taken care of or it will drive you crazy!
