Mac New iMac: First Impressions

Okay, for those of you who care, here's my first impressions of my new iMac G5 2.1 GHZ. This is my fifth iMac, so I'm pretty imbedded into the performance of this brilliant machines.

1.) I have one dead pixel on the screen...just one. It's small, most people wouldn't notice, but my eyes keep focusing on the imperfection and it's in the dead center of the screen. Should I exchange it just for that?

2.) It's quiet! No, I mean it's really quiet. My last '20 iMac 2GHZ was subtly noisier that this one. I hear the hard drive from time to time and that's it. Whisper quiet is not just an Apple cliche.

3.) I'm not sure how .1 GHZ makes a difference but it's zippier, yes, you'll notice. Maybe it's the memory, I dunno.

4.) World of Warcraft is no better on my last one that this one, I tried to up the default graphics settings to a little bump up...choppy. So, those of you wanting to switch just on the sheer fact there's a new video card in it "PCI-Express (say with an echo)", forget about it. I can't say I'm disappointed too much as for years Apple never gave it the graphics cards it should have, now it finally does. Still, it's not up to moderate gamer specs.

5.) Photo Booth - Big Deal

6.) Front Row - Totally Cool. Thanks Apple, this one was a well thought (or copied) idea.

7.) The smell - Nothing smells better than a new Mac. Just that heating up and smell of plastics....ah, you can't pay for a better bottled smell.

8.) iSight - Yeah, the camera has improved. I would say it's noticible different than my old iSight which magnetically hung on the top of my old mac. Another great innovation.

Well, that's it. Hope I didn't bore you too much or step on any toes. If you have any other questions let me know. Also, give me your opinion about the dead pixel. I just know those people at CompUSA are going to look at my like I'm on crack complaining about one dead pixel. Still, when I resell in 8 months and the eBay buyer asks, "Are there any dead pixels", I rather not say "Yeah, one, right in the dead center of the screen" Take care.

I owned a Generation 1 iMac G5. The 1.8 20" one. Had 5 replacements on it. Applecare just replaced it with one of these bad boys, 4 days ago. And lemme tell you, this thing is amazing!

1.) 2.1 G5 is zippier, ( if thats a word.) than the 1.8 G5.

2.) The 128 mb of Video ram is amazing!!! I used the 64 mb VR first gen iMac G5 and have been playing Worldof Warcraft on it since the game started, ( my toon name is Ghar, on Khadgar server for anyone playing) And this game had never looked so good! I was shocked at how much of a differnce this video card made.

3.) Machine runs so cool! The outside of the case of the other one was warm to hot in most places. Thsi one is cool to warm, and the warm areas are at top of case instead of being lower. Apple seems to have redone the internals of this one putting the heat generating items at the top of the case.

4.) OS X Tiger is amazing! I love the widgets and spotlight is amazing!

5.) OK so this might be the most quiet computer on the face of the earth. I really wonder if there isnt something wrong with mine, since it makes like NO NOISE! I mean seriously there is no sound, no fans whirring, no HD clicking, the only thing i can ever hear is the DVD drive when i put in a disc.

Seriously, if youre thinking of buying this machine, do it!!! The 3rd generation iMac G5 (iSight) is as flawless as a computer gets.

Yes, it appears as if Apple worked out most of the bugs from the first two releases.

My iMac 2.1 gets r done.

I started with a 17" 1.8 that my Pastor now has. Graduated to a 20" 2.0. Nice computer but had heat issues something terrible. Apple came through and replaced computer with 20" iMac 2.1. No problems to date.

Someone earlier said that .1 doesn't make that much difference. I wonder it that person actually had an iMac 2.0. I did and there is an amazing difference. Probably has to do with all the changes combined.

Good luck to all with their iMac iSights.

I think dead pixels (one or more) should mean that the computer/monitor be replaced. Come on, a DEAD PIXEL is a defect in an equipment that is new and should be sold in perfect conditions. I think that's common sense.
I'm expecting a new iMac 20" iSight and hope that I don't get any issue with it. If I notice that something is faulty I will definetely fight for a fix or replacement! I think every Mac user should do this istead of conforming to having even one little dead pixel.
