Best malware/trojan protection

I know everyone says that Macs don't need any antivirus, but I know that they can still get trojans, malware, etc. What is the best program to protect my Mac from those?

You might visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on anti-viruses and malware protection.

An excellent alternative is ClamXAV - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

But most trojans will be offered through web site downloads, so being careful not to download anything you know nothing about is likely as not your best protection.

The best protection of all is simply not to install anything that you are not absolutely sure of the origin of.

So for example, if a site offers to install an update of Flash for you, *don't do it*; look for an update directly from Adobe.com instead.

Most importantly of all, never, ever, click on an email attachment unless you know who it's from, what it is, and know for a fact that they sent it.

And even then it might contain malware, unbeknownst to the sender.
My general rule is never to push a button unless you are 100% positive of what it does and what will happen, or if you have an up-do-date backup and are willing to take the chance. Very little can happen to our computers that is out of our control. In the end, it's our responsibility and choice.
Common sense is the byword.

This only tells us that the database was updated, not that it was updated with Mac definitions. I finally tracked down a source for the claim that it can't find recent Mac trojans. Take a look here:

There are several entries about the clamXav issue if you just scroll down. I'm not sure I necessarily am a fan of the guy writing the blog, but it doesn't sound like anyone's arguing that he's wrong. There's even a comment, attached to one of the blog entries, written by Mark Allen (the author of clamXav). In this comment, Mark defends the ClamAV team for not making the Mac a priority because of our "small userbase," but does not deny the basic charge that the definitions are out of date.

The best way to avoid trojan horses and malware is to not fall for the scam in the first place. Trojans do not install themselves. You do. The best program to protect yourself from trojans is the software located between your ears. If it looks to good to be true it probably is. Don't be a sucker.
