Battery Life While Watching Movies

How long will my iPhone 3G battery last while I'm watching movies? I'm going on plane trip next week and I'm trying to get an idea how many movies I can watch.

If you are finding that the iPhone just doesn't have the battery life you need, you can always purchase a battery pack. A new one came out recently that is the smallest yet, and is a full case as well. Check it out:

I'm going to be buying one soon for those long trips where I don't have access to charge my iPhone. It would definitely be worth it if you want to get on the internet a bit between the flights because 3G really kills your batter fast. Some reviews have said it offers close to 2 full charges of the iPhone, so in my book that is definitely worth it.

Copied from this link.

*Maximum Battery Life*
iPhone 3G offers up to 5 hours of talk time on 3G, 10 hours of talk time on 2G,(1) 5 hours of Internet use on 3G (2), 6 hours of Internet use on Wi-Fi,(3) *7 hours of video playback, (4)* or 24 hours of audio playback (5) on a full charge at original capacity. In addition, iPhone features up to 300 hours of standby time. (6)

(4) Video playback: Testing conducted by Apple in May and June 2008 using preproduction iPhone 3G units and software. Video content consisted of a repeated 2-hour 23-minute movie purchased from the iTunes Store. All settings were default except: Call Forwarding was turned on; the Wi-Fi feature Ask to Join Networks and Auto-Brightness were turned off. Wi-Fi was enabled but not associated with a network. Battery life depends on the cellular network, location, signal strength, feature configuration, usage, and many other factors. Battery tests are conducted using specific iPhone units; actual results may vary.

When on the plane, you will have Airplane mode turned on, so all iPhone radios will be off. I always turn on Airplane mode before turning my iPhone off when instructed to turn off all electronic devices before take-off. When I power my iPhone back on when instructed that it is OK to do so, my iPhone powers on with Airplane mode already enabled.

Having Airplane mode on increases battery life. Apple includes 7 hours of video playback, which may be somewhat less than that, but you should be able to watch 2 full length movies with no problem - if your iPhone's battery is completely charged or close to it when starting. This has been my experience. I also bring along an external battery pack that I purchased just in case which connects via the USB dock connector cable.

It is interchangeable between the same model iPhones, and I'm even pretty sure you can use it for either the original iPhone or the iPhone 3G (check this out first). There are better battery packs out there, but they are bulkier and most don't offer the full case enclosure like this one does. So far, this is the slimmest battery pack for the iPhone, it looks great in my opinion, and still gives you over double your iPhone battery life. It has a switch so you can turn off the battery charging your iPhone, and you can sync your iPhone without taking it out of the case (the external cable is not the same, but it comes with the necessary one and still allows you to sync).
