Nvidia GT 120 - Can someone confirm it's working in 2008 mac pros?

Hello,

I have a 2008 mac pro, and although I have the ATI Radeon 4870 1GB version which is PC Flashed, I was wondering if the Nvidia card will work in 2008 mac pros despite what Apple says. At first, I was looking to ditch the Radeon 1GB for the Radeon 512 from Apple, as it has the mini-display port. But, the Nvidia option seems more reasonable.

Can someone comment on what I should do? Should I get the 4870 or the 120?
I plan on purchasing sometime next week the 24 inch ACD.

They should have known, if you told them you have a 2006/2007 that the online specs for the GT120 is it needs "PCI Express 2.0" though I don't think hardware requirements (and naming) really help or make it clear or technically accurate.

But the box I'd hope would say "Early 2008 model Mac Pro or later."
Can't be that hard.

Off the shelf, right now, there are no Nvidia cards being sold by Apple that work in 1st gen Mac Pro.

Hi Kappy,

I know it is the better of the two. I am just trying to decide if its worth it for me to get the gt 120 since I already have a 4870, though it doesn't have the mini-display port? I know the gt 120 doesn't require a power source, other than sticking it in a PCIe slot.

Or should I get rid of the pc flashed 4870 and get the Apple version and forget the 120?

This is a question only you can answer. You already have a flashed 4870 that I suppose is working for you. I would not know in what way you think the GT120 would be a replacement for the 4870 other than a lower power requirement and the ability to install more than one video card. The latter would only be meaningful if you needed to run multiple monitors.

As for replacing your 4870 with one from Apple I don't see why you would want to do that if the one you have is working OK.

I would not want to tell you what to do. I'm not comfortable making decisions for others, but if I were in your position and had no need for multiple cards then I would do nothing. But if you really don't want to keep that flashed 4870, you can send it to me where it will find a good home in my first generation MP. User uploaded file

In response to your message about Windows 7. No, I have no particular interest in running Windows 7. Although I have a Boot Camp partition on my MP with Vista installed, I almost never use it. I do not have much of a need to run Windows other than curiosity. But, if you wish to enlighten me about installing Windows 7, I could pass that knowledge on to other users who do want to use it.

Maybe I wasn't totally clear.. Its the 24 inch cinema display that i am after, and you are right.. Why would I want to replace my 1GB flashed 4870? Thats why I am asking if just to run the cinema display, the GT 120 might be a better choice?

Mini-display port is the question.. I know that the 4870 that I have is fine, just that the only way I can use the mini-display port with the 24 inch cinema display is if I get the monitor. Price is not the problem, rather its deciding what card I should get just to drive the mini-display port based 24 inch cinema display.

Plus, I heard great things about it such as built in isight for instance. My webcam which is a rocketfish has terrible quaility.

Do you run 64-bit version of VISTA ultimate or anything 64-bit? I will provide the information where I got 64-bit running on a 2006 mac pro:

Video of my first-gen Mac Pro booting into Windows 7 Beta 64bit (build 7000) through bootcamp. Sound, Wireless, and Graphics all working.

Specs: MacPro1:1 Nvidia 7300GT, 4GB RAM 667Mhz, 2 x 2.66Ghz Dual-Core Xeons, Leopard 10.5.6

I'm a bit out of my element regarding use of either card since I have neither. I suppose I would look at it from the point of view that if the 4870 would work with the monitor I want, then I'd have no reason to replace it, even were I not to use the mini-display port. But this isn't a question I can really answer since I am not familiar with the cards or the Apple Cinema Displays.

The Hatter is probably the better person to ask.

Kappy,

Did you get the information down on how to install 64-bit windows 7 on the 2006 mac pro? Ok, I have decided to go with the GT 120 since I already have a 1GB 4870 and it works great. Though, now it will be inactive as the 24 inch cinema display will be connected to the GT 120.

I will let you know if and when I decide to sell the 1GB 4870. I paid quite a bit for it, almost the same price as the Apple version which is only 512MB.

A real shame the 1GB version doesn't support mini-display.

I did get your information about Windows 7. Thanks for that.

I suppose the problem with your 4870 is that it's a street model and doesn't come with the Apple-centric mini-display port.

Anyway, although I'd certainly accept it I can't justify buying one. I have an ATI 3870 in my MP, and it's ample for my needs - probably overkill! I have the 2600 card, too, and I do notice the difference between it and the 3870 and versus the original 7300. Unfortunately, you can't get top performance from the 2600 with the 3870 also installed since only one slot can be 16x. So I only use the one card. I only have one monitor so there's little point for two cards.

ok here is my question i went to my local apple store about (80 Miles away) told them i had a Dual-Core Intel Xeon 2.66 GHz with the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT (256) and that i wanted to upgrade it they sold me a NVIDIA GT 120 it came in a apple box with no software and they said it should work as long as i had 10.5.6 installed so i installed it and NOTHING when i go to system profile it does not even show up as a video card it just says DISPLAY wher the older video card shows the Name of the card when installed i read a could of things online where people say they have it work just fine, so am i missing something? what can i do to get it to work or do i take it back ?
