Depending on the definition of DVD drive, be it a Combo unit
with DVD play and CD record/play; or a SuperDrive with the
ability to support burning to DVD and CD media types, the
kind of external housing or enclosure best suited for this idea
may well be something in the way of a FireWire enclosure...
Especially if the unit should ever be called upon to boot the
computer (or any capable computer) with a system disc in it.
There may be something from Other World Computing, a call
or email to them could be helpful; and if you can specify the
optical drive's model they should be able to match it up. An-
other company, called MCE, has a variety of replacement
optical drive options that seem to be working well in Macs.
An expert or advanced novice, home tech, hobbyist, & etc
should also be able to point out some paths they've traveled.
Are you contemplating the use of a different iBook G4s
superdrive as an external to one that has a Combo unit?
Some of these concepts may need to be spelled out in
order to get some idea of what direction you are going.
Not all drive enclosures may be able to handle the OEM
optical drive and the drive may not like a USB enclosure.
Hopefully one of the suppliers can line you up with the
correct external optical drive housing for your needs.
Specifications found online may help you buy locally.
Sometimes, a local supplier may be a better deal.
(That said, there are few in my state...!)
