iPhone 3GS sim swap with iPhone 3G? OK?

Hello,
So, my wife is using my old iPhone 2G while I have a new 3G. I upgraded her phone to the iPhone 3GS. Will there be a problem if I swap the sim cards so she uses my older 3G and I use the new 3GS?

Regards,

Larry

I am trying to do the iPhone swap but with the ORIGINAL iPhone (NON-3G), and ATT has been absolutely useless, with 3 different sales reps telling me three different things. From absolutely possible, to absolutely impossible. I currently have the original phone, and its going month-to-month, ie the 2-yr contract is over. What I want to do is bring my wife to ATT from Verizon on a new 2yr contract, part of a newly created family plan, sign her up with the 3GS, and then swap phones. That way I get the new iPhone 3GS with my number, not tied to new 2yr contract (so I can possibly go to Verizon in the winter if the iPhone moves to their platform), and my wife gets my original iPhone. Can anyone confirm that this works or does not work? Has anyone actually tried this? I really appreciate any help! Thanks, Aaron

The SIM card used with an iPhone is activated with the iPhone - the SIM card is "married" to the iPhone's IMEI number.

I'm not sure the above is a true statement. When I sold my 3G phone last Friday without its sim card, the person who bought it, brought along his 3G sim card to an inop IP that he took "swimming" accidently and didn't work anymore. As soon as he put "his" sim card in my phone, he was able to make calls. Also, in Preferences, it show his phone number as the working number.

I haven't spoken with him since he left with my old IP, so I don't know if he later ran into any problems or if he had to "fine" tune the sim card with ATT. I DO know there are no calls being made with/to on my account with it as I checked on ATT.com and the last number was shown as used, was a call I made before I sold it to him.

I might add for clarity that I believe ATT unassociated my old IP with my account as the new 3G S now has my telephone number. In other words, the phone I sold was locked, but not associated with me.

So, am I hosed? I am not happy about getting stuck with a $499 charge to upgrade my 3G phone and don't want to wait until December to get a lower price. Both phones are 3G phones and the older 3G phone is still on the network.

This looks like a simple case of having ATT swap phone numbers on your wife's and your phone. Can they not do that? Seems pretty simple to me as you "own" the 2 numbers as long as you have them.

Not to stoke the gender fires, but I suspect the IP is heavily one sided on male use. When I offered my 3G to my wife, she said it was too big for her purse. No way did she want it, so I sold it instead. Now I do know women who have IPs, but from my limited observation, I think they make up a small minority of IP users.
