As a current user, I am astonished at you charging existing customers $699 vs $299 for the new 3G S (for a first time users). This is very short sited marketing. Current users could be your biggest buying population since we like the iphone already. Almost all the current phones will go to other users who will want to get an account or will just add on to family accounts. Putting the 3G in many more hands that will thus influence even more to see this as the new standard, replacing Blackberries. You will still get new users! This approach will eliminate almost all but the very rich from replacing their iPhones and at the end of the day, you are just cutting off what would otherwise have been another big piece of the pie for phone sales that now, will not occur. Not to mention the huge ill will to current users (based on the reaction I have already gotten). We think you are blowing it big time. What a missed opportunity to be The One who really takes care of ALL of its customers. Welcome to the ranks of mediocrity.....and at your own cost. I think short sited Greed is shooting you in the foot.

The old 3G also cost $699, but ATT sold it for a $299 down payment, with the rest of the cost paid from the monthly fees of the two year contract. You haven't finished paying for it yet.
Suppose you bought a car with a down payment, and a two year contract to pay the rest of the cost in monthly instalments. Next year, when a new model comes out, would you expect them to sell it to you for just the cost of the down payment.

You do know that AT&T's contract with Apple is up in 2010 right? There's no news of Apple extending that agreement yet. So what happens if Verizon or T-mobile signs on and they get the iphone next year? How many of you guys are gonna stick with AT&T? I know I'm jumping ship as soon as that happens. You can also just get out of your contract if you don't want to pay full price or the $399/499 upgrade by paying the ETF. I saw this thread on another forum and I found it interesting.

I bought my 3G with a new AT&T contract on May 8, 2009 one day shy of being able to trade in in for the 3Gs is what I was told when I called AT&T, I know whinning ***** but one day difference! The manager told me that if I had bought the phone on the 9th I would be entitled to trade it in minus the 10% restocking fee, is there anyone else in this situation? Are there any other options or has anyone heard of them making an exception?
