Posted recently to you about having daughter's computer home.

Checked and i do have 4.1.9 firmware on it.

Now when I boot from OS X Panther (burned cd not original) I checked and repaired disk disk permissions and disk.

When I went to do a restore and archive installation it got l/2 through and then said installation failed, restart and try again. It did say that I have a new version of OS X installed, which is probably just the updates for the panther.

So that's where I am now.

Question is I think it now has something to do with my daughter changing password or something and being an administrator. I thought I was supposed to be able to see the OS X hard drive, but i see nothing. When I go under the apple everything is grey.

When I was looking through panther instructions I came across this:

Warning: If you are the only person who knew the master password and you cannot remember it, you will not be able to recover the documents in your home folder. Is this why her comuter isn't loading.
Anybody have any advice?

With the OS X cd and booted up from there. When I go under the apple everything is there that would be there except greyed out so I can't get into anything. Another interesting thing is on my computer it says on the bottom log out and my name on hers it says log out system administrator. Somehow I think this is the problem and why it isn't starting up. It starts up fine in os 9.2.

Any suggestions?

You need to ask your daughter if she ever installed, or attempted to install, Tiger (OS X v. 10.4). If she did, you need a Tiger Install CD to do the Archive Install. If she no longer has the Tiger CD and wishes to reinstall Panther, the entire hard drive will need to be erased and reformatted. All files will be lost and gone forever.

unless she tried and downloaded an update from the apple website for tiger by mistake. I understand that in order to install tiger you have to buy the rights to do this on specific computers and you have to have the disks, it's not a free upgrade. I know she doesn't have a tiger cd or knows anyone with one either. I'm doing restore and archive right now ad so far it hasn't failed. It is up to Base system part 1 (22 minutes). I'm keepng my fingers crossed.

Also, how come I can't get into the apple at all for her system and it says log out system administrator there where it once said her name. Any clue?

THANKS TO ALL!

GOOD NEWS! HER COMPUTER SEEMS TO BE UP AND RUNNING. KEEPING MY FINGERS CROSSED.

After a second attempt to restore and archive it went through the first install disk ok and l/2 through Disk 2 when I got an error message saying it couldn't install. I clicked ok and as soon as I did that her screen popped up. Do you think the install disks got through most of the important restores or am I going to find out somewhere down the line that something isn't working right.

The things I did while in the restore disk was to verify and fix disk errors. change the password for her. You may remember when the disk was in there when I clicked on the apple everything was grey, but it said log off as administrator (this used to say her name).
As soon as her screen became available it asked me to log in so I logged in as the log in that I changed it to. when I looked in the apple it then said log of as "her name" which is what it used to say. I went in and did as others suggested and created a new user for emergencies (except I'm not quite sure how that works for getting into her hd). I can see that it now asks how we want the computer to load under her name and password or mine (the new user). Can anyone shed any light on this.

Thanks for your patience to everyone, especially Dreed, Franco and Giles. Don't know how I would have gotten through this without you.

As i said in my last post computer seems to work fine but it did fail l/2 through second disk.

I posted a question about Panther on the OS x topics and someone gave me this response. What do you think.

Hmm, if the system said the installation failed, then I would say all bets are off - it could be anything, and it would probably be a good idea to try to repeat the "Archive and Install". If you do decide to continue with the machine in the current state, make sure you keep backing up your data...

Ok, having said that, have you tried setting the computer to log in to the second account? This would test to see whether or not "automatic login" is working at all, or if it is just a problem with the first account. Also, it is not uncommon for "automatic login" to fail because of a problem with the password, as you suspected, so you could try temporarily promoting the second account to an "admin" (just in case there is a problem) then resetting the password of the first account using the "Accounts" pref pane rather than the CD. The problem is that since a password change was what started this whole chain of events, and the fact that there are indications that the system may not be quite right, may be reasons not to try this (think about whether the inconvenience of manually logging in is worth the potential hassle).

Another possibility is that there is a problem with the "NetInfo" database (which stores among other things, the records of the users on the machine and references to password records). When an "archive and install" preserving user and network settings is performed, the system is reinstalled, but the "NetInfo" database is not so if the database is corrupted to begin with, a reinstallation won't fix that (there are methods for attempting to address that problem if it comes down to that).

edit: by the way (you were asking about the "utilities option"), since the other user isn't literally "Other", then the "root" user probably isn't an issue, but the application is "Macintosh HD" > "Applications" > "Utilities" > "NetInfo Manager.app"

So the second time I did it I got completely through the first disk and maybe l/2 through the second before I got install failed. However, as I said, her computer just came on and is working fine now.

From what I understand you think I should attempt the restore and archive again with the disks. (the disks I used were not original panther cd but burned copy).

I'm just afraid I will mess the computer up again. It seems like it is okay now, but if you really feel the computer will be more stable with trying to do a restore and archive again I will try it.

HELP!

NOW MY DAUGHTERS COMPUTER IS COMPLETELY MESSED UP.

AS THE OTHER PERSON SUGGESTED I TRIED TO DO A RESTORE AND ARCHIVE ONCE AGAIN (even though her computer looked perfectly fine and i repaired all the permission disks, etc). It said there was an error and then when the disk came out i got a question mark folder. now it looks like i have to do a clean install and she will LOSE EVERYTHING.

IS THAT WHAT I HAVE TO DO?

WHEN I GO INTO THE COMPUTER WITH THE OS 9 DISKS IT SAYS NOTHING ABOUT OS X BEING AN OPTION FOR A START UP DISK.

DID I LOOSE EVERYTHING. SHOULD HAVE LEFT IT ALONE IT LOOKED FINE.

Sep 17, 2005 8:19 PM in response to dreed2

EXACTLY. I'VE BEEN CRYING ALL DAY.

CAN ANYTHING BE DONE TO RETRIEVE ANYTHING? I GUESS NOT.

NOW ONLY 1 DISK INSTALLED. COULDN'T GET THE OTHER ONE TO DO IT. MAYBE IT'S SCRATCHED OR SOMETHING. SAID I CAN INSTALL DISK 2 LATER BY OPENING PACKAGES. DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS.

SO RIGHT NOW I HAVE l/2 OF OS X INSTALLED.

I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE THAT ALL OF THE PROGRAMS WERE STILL THERE LIKE TOAST, OS X WORD, AOL. WHY WERN'T THEY WIPED OUT TOO.

WILL NORTON OR DISK WARRIER BE ABLE TO RECOVER ANYTHING?

SHE'S GOING TO KILL ME, YOU'RE RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I put disk 1 of os x in and said to install i got the warning that there was already a version of os x on their so i tried to do restore and archive When the disk two gave me an error I said oh well, I guess it didn't do anything. But then it spit out the disk and I got a folder with a questin mark on. I went into os 9 with the disk and it said I only had os 9.2 so I assumed that I wiped her os X out somehow. After crying for two hours I put the OS x disk back in and I no longer had the warning and no longer had the option to restore and archive. So after crying for another hour I just told it to do the first option, i think it said install os x for the first time, as opposted to clean install.

When I put in disk two it didn't read it and told me that I can continue this part of the installation at a later time. So now I only have l/2 the os x installed and I don't know what they mean by install disk two later by opening packages.

I can't see any of her photos or documents anywhere. When I open System 9 folder I found some old music in a not shared folder and one in a music folder. But it was from a year ago. So I at least still have that.

As I said all of her applications that I put on previously are there like toast, aol instant messenger, Os x version of word, photoshop. They are all there, but where are the pictures and all her documents (all her papers were on there) yikes! She's going to die after she kills me!

All of her files should be in a folder called Users which should have a folder with her account name inside of it.
