My flower power of approx four years ago has started with a jumping image on the screen. Any help. Posted under monitors and video discussions but no answers there. Is the monitor dying?

Hi.

I've been putting off doing the erase and install until I made sure that I had everything copied. I keep checking to see if there is anything that I missed. Just a couple of questions to clarify what I am doing.

1. Is the erase and install option different than going through disk utilities and erasing? I know if I go through disk utilities and can choose to put the 9 drivers in for a later install of 9. Is that why I would go through disk utilities. I would rather not put 9 on to save some room, but may find that I need it at some later point. Or, if I do put os 9 on can I just get rid of it at a later time by just trashing the os 9 folder itself.

2. Also, I copied her library folder from the system that was working (previous system 2). After the reinstall do I replace the library that installs with this previous system 2 library that I backed up and throw the new one out? (you suggested I save library/application and library/preferences so that her programs will all open without having to put the passwords in). I copied the whole library. Or do I just replace library/application assitant and library/preferences.

3. After I do the erase and reinstall, before I put everything back on should I go onto the internet and do all software updates and then move her stuff back?

Sorry to be such a pest, but I just want to do this thing right. I appreciate your help sooooo much!

Did an archive and install (big mistake). Everything was fine. I moved everything back and then suddenly after doing all the software updates when I went onto internet I was typing all of the web pages in capital letters even though I didn't have the shift key held down.

Now I am trying to do an erase and install (what I should have done in the first place) and now the computer won't recognize that I am holding down the c key to start up in cd mode. Now everytime I restart it starts up in safe boot and when I go to type in my password it is saying it is wrong because I guess it thinks I'm capitalizing the password.

What can i do now besides buy a new compute and give up. As you all know, I've been working on this non stop for two weeks now.

Any help now would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks for responding. Turns out the keyboard is bad. Swaped it out with my other one and now it works just fine. Upper and lower case. Can't believe that in the middle of all this the keyboard died. Thought that was a major problem with the restore and install.

Two other things have happened though after doing the latest updates via software update. It updated itunes and now I have no sound. System preference says no output devices or input devices. It was working right before update.

Also after update I'm not showing an address window in safari.

Can you shed any light on this?

I think I'm okay now with itunes. I have 500 processor, but good to know because I have another slot loading imac that is only 400 so I won't download it. When I was having a problem with the keyboard (which I realized that was why it was typing all caps and
not starting up cd on holding c key down, but instead was doing all weird things like starting my computer up in safe mode). I swaped keyboards and now this one is okay, but I forgot to restart computer after it was in safe mode so I think it didn't load everything at start up. I tunes seems okay so far.

Safari that I have is whatever was reinstalled in archive from panther and then the software update.

So are you still having the sound problem?

Did you repair the permissions after the updates?

To fix Safari try going into the Previous Systems folder open any one of the system folders find Applications folder inside of the Previous System you chose and try the Safari application in there.

Ex. path
1. Macintosh HD
2. Previous Systems
3. Previous System 1
4. Applications
5. Safari

If you don't find it there try other Previous Systems. Ex. Previous System 2

Sound fine. After realizing I was in safe mode due to the malfunctioning keyboard and complete system didn't load. After restart sound was fine.

Only thing that was wrong with safari was I had to go into view and turn on the address bar. dah.

Still baffled by why there is a os 9 folder icon when I click on my hard drive at the top next to the spinning wheel thingey. Do you know why that is.

It isn't like that on my other computer.
