Color fades when scrolling in Safari 4

Since upgrading yesterday from Safari 4 beta to Safari 4 proper (and from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7), a strange things happen: when I scroll up or down in Safari, the color fades. It returns if I stop and click outside the app (i.e. on the desktop background), then recurs if I again scroll in Safari. Didn't happen before the upgrade, and it's quite annoying. Any suggestions?

macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.7), 2 GHz Intel Core Duo, 2 GB RAM

I disagree: it would hardly have to effect all users, as the software bug may only be applicable to certain hardware configurations. I'd never experienced this problem until I installed 4.0. Repairing permissions only fixed the problem temporarily. Dragging the window to one screen and back to the other fixes the problem, which recurs every time I use Fast User Switching to lock the screen or put the laptop to sleep.

I haven't tried repairing the disk yet.

As I said before the other way to fix it but it seems temporarily is re-setting Safari and trashing the safari preference file plist. Also it is so erratic when the problem start or goes away. Some days don't happen at all and I am sure I didn't change anything. and some days the problem is constant I finally start to use firefox browser that I don't like personally. I sent the bugs reports also countless times. I really thought it would be fixed with the 4.0.1 version these are not PCs machines I paid over 3K for my machine I don't care if no many people have the problem or not I do and the reason I use Apple is because they have the tendency to fix problems like this one if not I pay 800 bucks for a dell.

To be fair, it may indeed impact all users who are using a 2nd display and Fast User Switching but measuring it is difficult. For example, I thought I was simply going mad for a while before doing a search online and tripping over this discussion. It's a bizarre bug but one that does seem to require specific circumstances to manifest itself but once known it can be consistently reproduced. I'm sure that 2nd displays are very common but the use of Fast User Switching is probably less so. Personally, I simply use it as a secure form of locking my system while I am away from my desk but others may simply use screensaver passwords to achieve the same.

People are jumping to a lot of inaccurate conclusions here. As I posted a number of pages back, I was having this problem last week on my Macbook Pro, but it was (mostly) fixed by repairing permissions. I have NEVER USED A SECOND MONITOR and DO NOT HAVE FAST USER SWITCHING enabled. Still, I was having the color fade when scrolling. Repairing permissions did fix the Safari issue, but I then had the same color fading in my Finder windows when scrolling. A restart fixed that problem, and things have been fine since. This is a bug that does not have an identified cause or fix at this point

Interesting. Had you installed any version of Safari 4 at the point you had this problem? Is anyone else having this problem on a single-monitor setup or without FUS enabled? I've never seen this with the Finder at all? How does it manifest itself there for you? Just scrolling through windows? Visible on the desktop?

As far as not having Fast User Switching on or a second monitor, you're a statistical outlier from what I've read in this thread. Very strange.

I also have this bug.

Early 2008 MacBook Pro, 30" Cinema Display, and I use fast user switching frequently. Bug only occurs with Safari 4.0 and 4.0.1 final, it did not occur with any of the beta versions of Safari 4, nor have I noticed it in any other application.

Repairing permissions does not fix the problem, but dragging the browser to another screen and back stops the problem temporarily.

yes, i had been running the Safari 4 beta since the day it was released, without a hitch. about an hour after installing the final Safari 4, problems started. i was having the same safari issues as others report, but once I repaired permissions, no more problems. The Finder, however, then started acting goofy. No color problems, but as I scrolled down a long open window, the text started getting very blurry and pixellated. weird. As I said, a restart fixed that, and no problems since.

"But it is not experienced by more than a few users"

That's true.. if you add "in my office" to the end of the sentence! We are probably 10-12 Mac users here at work who have upgraded to Safari 4 Final (and now to 4.0.1), and there are four of us who have experience this bug daily.

I do agree that it could be another piece of software that does the damage, but that would require all of us to list all the software/add-ons/widgets etc. here to find the culprit, wouldn't it? From Safari 4 beta to Safari 4 final something went wrong, and I'm pretty sure that Apple's engineers would be able to tell what kind of code could trigger this bug.

I'm inclined to suggest that the conclusions are "incomplete" rather than "inaccurate". It seems that you have found another means to trigger this behavior but I am absolutely 100% certain that you can reliably reproduce this bug by connecting a second display and making use of Fast User Switching. Repairing Permissions doesn't make any difference and I have no issues with the Finder, which makes me think that what you are seeing is something slightly different.

For me, dragging the Safari window to the 2nd display and then back again resolves the problem until the next time that I use Fast User Switching.
