Top sites ...how to disable

I CAN'T STAND the top sites and want to disable it....anyone know how without getting into terminal? It stinks that apple did this and pushes their chosen sites to my computer.

MacBook Pro, G5 and 12 others..., Mac OS X (10.5.7)

H-S:

Something is still not working. I still get the Top Sites page out of the blue and randomly while browsing and although the "top Sites" appear "masked" (ie. they all have the same nondescriptive image) if you click on them they take you back to some page in my history.... I followed the instrutions of your link above but the main issue persists.... Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

I found a fairly easy way to get rid of the horrible top sites malware. I trashed Safari from applications in finder, and then used spotlight to find two safari folders and trashed them. Emptied trash, and then downloaded the latest Combo udate from the apple website for my system. You have to use a different browser to do this as you will have temporarily lost safari. safari 3 back up and running, and all I lost were my bookmarks...easy to replace. Didn't keep safari 4 long enough to find out if was loading cookies from all the obviously paid sites it was browsing in the background.
This is the path Microsoft went down....they were so eager to give themselves and whomever they could get money from access to your computer and your browsing activities, that they opened the door to let in malicious hackers as well....disgraceful

Yes, I have done all of that and double checked it. Still the Top Sites page comes up at will (with the snapshots masked but if you point at them it spell the web address). The most annoying thing is this
popping up at will while I am working on a different page and I lose the edits I am working on.

It is really frustrating....

I have been trying to understand what's going on with the random switching from whichever webpage I am on to the To Sites page and I noticed that what happens is that while I use the trackpad
(which I keep in its simplest form with nothing selected such as tap for click, etc) the "History" in the
top menu flickers (at random) and as a consequence the browser things I am selecting its top item (in History) which is Top Sites (which I am not! my cursor is far away and I have not even click anywhere).

Any idea why is doing this and how to fix it? It is the main source of my frustration as it kicks me out of the page am in and I lose info when clicking to go Back to it....

Thanks!

PS: as for storing new sites it is only storing over and over the first two on my Bookmarks but so far no new ones --this is after following the instructions on your 6/25 link. Thanks.
