Cannot connect to Cracked.com

Okay, I know this sounds like a super-specific and tedious post but, for some unknown reason, I cannot connect to one of my favorite site's, Cracked.com, on my Macbook Pro or Mac Mini. I've asked other friends to log on to the site from their homes and they haven't had a problem. I realize that this may be some weird problem with my internet provider but figured I'd ask here first in case I'm overlooking something. If not, then I'll suit up for battle with Comcast. Thanks.

Lyssa, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I cannot log on to the site on either Safari or Firefox. On Safari, I get the following message:

Safari can’t connect to the server.
Safari can’t open the page “ http://www.cracked.com/” because it could not connect to the server “www.cracked.com”.

Firefox tells me pretty much the same thing. I'll try logging on to a different account on the Mac Mini later if no other suggestions work. Thanks again.

Trying another user account should only take a few minutes, even if you have to create that new account. You could delete it once we're done troubleshooting.

If you can visit the site without issues in the new user account, this suggests a problem in your main account--perhaps a problem with the hosts file or some DNS settings. If you still have issues in the new account, your problem is system wide--or you may have a problem with your modem and/or router.

dbsneddon, thanks for the link to a similar post. I read through it and followed the suggestions but nothing worked.

Lyssa, I created another user account and that did not work either.

In reading from that other thread and seeing that other people have had similar problems with the site on different browsers, is it possible that the problem is with the site's code that makes it incompatible with Apple? Just a thought.

I am having the same problem and have noticed it on at least one other website, about.com. What's strange is that I cannot access Cracked.com or any about.com site with either Safari 4.0 or Firefox (although I was accessing them fine prior to the upgrade) but my iPod touch can just fine. I have a 2.4Ghz MacBook running OSX 10.5.7 that connects to the net through an airport express. When I'm connected to my work's network I can connect to cracked.com (I needed a control test) but I have not checked about.com
why would the iPod connect but not the computer?

Add some more sites that do not work:
http://ezinearticles.com/
http://www.scifi.com/rewind/?sid=870861 (None of the videos play)
http://en.allexperts.com/

Neither work in Firefox or Safari under OS X. All work fine in XP.

Does no one have any more suggestions for this? I tried plugging my modem directly into my Macbook, but it still doesn't work, so it's not the router. I also tried pinging all of these sites, but they all time out immediately (literally, right after I press "Return"). It's like it's not even trying to contact the site before it times out. Since others are having the same problems on the same sites, I doubt it's our ISPs blocking them, either.

There is clearly some bug in OS X networking that is preventing seemingly random sites from loading, as like I said earlier, all the sites work fine under Windows XP (both Bootcamp and Parallels). This is (barely) tolerable now, but once sites I actually visit on a regular basis stop working in OS X, I'm not going to be a happy camper.

Have you had a look at the hosts file?
It is in a hidden folder on your startup disc called private then it is in ect and the file is called hosts

You can block any website / connection to the web from your computer through this file.

This is what the file should have in it
"##
# Host Database
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost
##"

What is in between the quotes is all that is needed

PLEASE BACKUP ANY SYSTEM FILE BEFORE EDITING IT!

**USE AT YOUR OWN RISK**

Note: to edit this file you will need to change the permissions on the file it self and the folder. But do be sure to change these permissions back.

My host file only contains the following:

##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost

And just for the heck of it, an attempted ping:

Macbook-OSX:~ Mono$ ping www.about.com
PING www.about.akadns.net (207.241.148.80): 56 data bytes
ping: sendto: No route to host
ping: sendto: No route to host
ping: sendto: No route to host
