Audio Input Output on MacBook Pro 13 inch

I have the mid 2009 13" with single audiojack right of the SD card reader.

When you use the iPhone headset or In-ear with 4 pin mini jack it uses the mic as an input for games or whatever. No change in system options are needed.

my understanding was that if an application requested speaker access, like itunes, the system would automatically switch for you, leaving the system preferances the same, so if gaming it would use the monitor mic and leave the speakers going. But i cant be sure of how it would work simultaneously, because i have the 17 inch, but that was my understanding

I was playing EVE online and it worked great.

I also tapped the mic on the headset to check if it was the headset mic or the built-in mic.

the 13" is different than the 15" and 17" because it only has 1 jack.

tech support of any kind has to assume that nothing has been done, otherwise tech support calls could end up lasting hours, when the real culprit is that its simply not plugged in, and easy assumption to make but it happens all the time

I couldn't believe my self either. I assumed when I bought it was either input or output. Then wanting to boot camp into BF2 and play with my headset (2 jacks) I thought ****! But then I read I could use the iPhone headset to do both. And Hey presto. It worked. (I haven't tried in boot camp yet, BRB)

Now some bloke only need to make a Y connector so everyone can use their favourite headset in their favourite game.

Doesn't work in Vista.

Probably driver issue I would guess since it DOES work in Leopard.

I shouldn't have to buy an external device to use a first party peripheral with apple hardware using apple's drivers.

Some interesting reading here......
I have the 2009 Macbook pro with the dual audio input/output and have noticed something interesting...

When using Apple iPhone headsets, the headphones and Mic works ok - can be verified in system preferences. Also works for Seinheiser headsets.
Anyway,
Plug in a V-Moda and only the headphones work. Even if i select 'line-in' in system prefs it still fails to work. Comparing the two connector pins they appear identical.

Whats interesting is the V-Moda headsets work fine in the iPhone, along with obviously the apple headsets and Seinheiser headsets.
Ideas?
