SNAPPING to Regions and/or Playhead ???

i am not finding the snapping tool i need - perhaps someone can help me out. i am not editing to a time grid but rather to picture so the time grid element is irrelevant to me....so....

1) i want regions to snap together so i can but-edit one region to another easily.

2) i want to be able to snap a region to the playhead. i use the playhead as a place keeper to spot to picture and want to be able to snap to it (playhead) easily to spot sound to picture.

went through the manual to no avail. thanks for your input.

Hi

1) Look at the Drag modes: Shuffle L does the trick. Drag a region to the right of an existing region and drop it. The moved region will spring and but-up against the existing region.

2) I found this out from the Logic 303 TNT2 video series by macprovideo. A very nice tip. In Key commands look up "Pickup clock". Use the key command to move selected region to playhead position.

This could be exactly what you want:

_To tie selected regions between locators:_
1 Set the left and right locator positions by doing one of the following:
• Drag from left to right across the desired portion of the Bar ruler.
• Set the desired value in the Transport’s Locator fields.
2 Select the desired regions within the locator boundaries.

Tip: You can quickly select all regions inside the locators by choosing +Edit > Select Inside Locators+ (or using the corresponding key command, default: Shift-I).

3 Choose +Region > Tie Regions within Locators+ (or use the corresponding key command).

*This function lengthens all selected regions (within the locator boundaries), closing the gaps between them. The last region on each track (within the locator boundaries) is not affected.*

Caramby,

With all due respect, your method does not seem to take into account the OP's question. It is also a very long method to achieve what can be done with one key command, and is perfect for spot to video workflows..... Try out the following and see what you think:

Pickup Clock as I explained in my previous post is ONE key command that moves the selected region to the position of the playhead. Check in the Key commands window for the existing command or set one up 🙂

Which of my replies are you referring to? Er… well, anyway, your "Pickup Clock" Key Command does seem to be the ideal solution for one part of what he requires. So well done for suggesting that!

However, creating Markers may still be useful for other reasons, especially since he says he is using the Playhead as a reference (which is a bit of a fragile method for marking a position).

As for butting up the Regions… how have I misread his post? Well, anyway, he will know what it is he wants to do, so he can tell us if we're barking up the wrong trees!

On reflection, could it be you are only looking at one half of the OP's question? That might explain the confusion… my reply (that you were replying to) was addressing the other issue.

Which could be why it looked inappropriate to you! However, I think it does what it says on the tin…

I just love the suspense, don't you?

🙂

And thanks again for your admirable "Pickup Clock" suggestion. Very erudite!

In my original post I answered both questions.

The OP asked:
"1) i want regions to snap together so i can but-edit one region to another easily."

I answered:

"1) Look at the Drag modes: Shuffle L does the trick. Drag a region to the right of an existing region and drop it. The moved region will spring and but-up against the existing region."

Make sure you have the following 3 CRUCIAL Key Commands set up:

• Global Commands> *Set Locators by Regions/Events* ( I use the equals key: = )

• *Go to Right Locator* ( I use ] and for Go to Left --- [

• *Pick Up Clock* ( which I think you have already sussed)

* * *

Lets say you have a Region A early in the song and you want to snap Region B which lies much later in the song right up snug against the right hand side of Region A

1 - Select Region A

2 - Press KC *Set Locators by Region* - that immediately puts the Left [ and Right ] locators on either side of Region A

3 - Press KC ] Go to Right Locator and immediately the Playhead snaps to the Right Hand Side of Region A

4 - Select Region B

5 - Press KC *Pick Up Clock* and the Left hand side of Region B will jump seamlessly to lie next to the Right Hand side of Region A

6 - You can then join the Regions ( midi or audio) with a Single KC

* * * *

You may think this sounds complicated but once you are familiar ith the commands it becomes automatic to accomplish in split seconds.

And it is very very accurate - especially when cutting/rejoining audio ... ( so long as your edit points are correct)

Good luck

I would never have considered that Logic could manage sample-accurate cut-&-paste editing tasks such as this in the Arrange Window.

Indeed Caramby, you know I am not a sample editor/experienced audio pro tools type but wonders can be worked in the Arrange page. I have cut up and re-pasted entire sections of a jazz rhythm section on at least two of my albums and I swear you cannot hear the difference .. or at least no one has been able to point out to me that the guys did not play what you hear in that sequence

All this to say that the cut and paste of audio is phenomenally accurate and powerful compositional tool but you just need a method for hearing exactly where to cut and a bit of cross fading of audio regions
