Macbook air dead 2 months after warranty ends!

Hello,

My name is Tal and I am from Israel. I have purchased the macbook air 14 months ago, and last week in crashed - i.e. when I try to power on it beeps 3 times, pause, beeps 3 times and so on - and does not turn on. It happened suddenly, without any reason (i.e. it did not fall, got wet or something like this). Well, I went to the local representative of apple in Israel, they checked it and said it is the memory - and they need to replace mother board = $1000 (!!!). The computer is not in guarantee anymore (for 2 months....) - so I HAVE TO PAY THIS AMOUNT!!

When you buy mac - you do not even dream that this will happen to you. Any suggestions what to do?

Thank you,
Tal

Macbook Air, Mac OS X (10.5.7), None

*sigh..

Anyway, can you 100% sure that PC branded laptop like Fuj**u (made in Japan!) will not have this kind of problem?? What if same thing happens to your PC laptop? Throw it from the building again then give up on using PC or Mac?

Pls calm down.

I assume that you have no statistic or engineering background so you think that all the shipped-out products are 100% good. You must understand that all Apple products are mass production and it is impossible to have 100% shipped-out products are flawless and perfect unless consumer is willing to pay a higher price (to cover their lost due to tighten quality control; tighten quality control will cause lower yield of the product).

C'est la vie.

I hope you can understand the situation and i believe that Apple will always try their best to meet the consumer's expectation.

Cheers.

We all feel for you, Tal. But just try to remember that this was simply and unfortunately bad luck and your experience is far from typical. A flaw in the hardware + not being able to purchase AppleCare...ick.

If you stay persistent (but polite) on the phone with them, and keep climbing up the support ladder, you still might eventually get somewhere.

Did you not understand the one year warranty when you purchased it?

How is this Apple's fault? If they replaced everybody's computer out of warranty, what is the point of having a warranty at all? If the warranty never ended, do you realize how expensive the products would be?

I know when I purchase my goods to check the warranty before hand. If im not happy with the terms before hand, I will not buy. Simple as that.

It sounds like even if Applecare extended warranty WAS available in Israel - the OP would not have purchased it because it would only cover the MBA for 3 years. It sounds like the OP needs 10 to 15 years warranty coverage (since he 'expects' it to last at least 10 years) - and I am not aware of any electronics maker that offers that length of warranty protection.

So - the OP saved money by not buying the warranty coverage - and now he can use that money to repair the MBA at the reduced cost Apple is willing to give you. See - it all works out in the end.

If it happens to a simple pc laptop no problem - you can fix it in 100 places, no need to replace mother board for memory exchange, and you can always buy another one for $500. From a laptop that costs in Israel $2500 - I expect to work more than 14 months. From a company that sells laptop in $2500 I expect to stand behind their products ones failed only 2 months after the so short warranty (and I repeat to all those who do not yet understand - IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO EXTEBD GUARANTEE IN ISRAEL. Apple - why? is it the end of the world? are you an international company or not??)

Mista, if everybody's macbookair will stop functioning after 14 months - apple will not exist anymore right? so let's assume that it doesn't happen too frequently - ok? fair assumption.

So if it happens in 1 our of 1000 cases (i really hope for apple that this is the case!) - and they are a serious company (they must be - right? they sell their items in very nice prices...) - they need to come and say - ok - it is only 2 months after the warranty ended, and ok - he could not extend the warranty, and ok - he purchased this computer for $2500 - we will replace/fix it.

This is the difference between an ok company, and a company that positions itself like apple does.

I don't know what warranty lengths are normal in the US but in Europe every cheap *** manufacturer offers at least 2 years and most better known ones offer 3 - some even offer 5 or 7...

Apple on the other side with premium products offers only 1 year out of the box and you have to pay to upgrade that to 3. This sounds like a rip off to anyone living here and makes Apple seem very greedy.

Everybody here thinks Apple is also making a certain statement by doing this - something like "we don't believe in our own prodcuts" by giving merely the bare minimum of warranty (industry-standard wise).

I - like the OP - also think that a premium company offering premium products for higher-than-standard prices should include such things like a 3 year warranty out of the box and maybe charge for an extension to 7 years. If they believe in their products it should make no difference financially on their end.

Also try to understand him better, customs, mentalities, etc. are very different between Europe, the US and other places of the world.

You are right, Harche. Now imagine that you pay so much and your computer is dead after 14 months, and the company won't fix it for you.
Imagine that I could not do the extension of warranty. Imagine I purchased it in a much higher price than it is sold in the US, and got it for poor maintainance plan.
Now I have found this article of someone with exactly the same problem! Apple MacBook air dead after 14 months!!! - http://www.aadjemonkeyrock.com/2009/05/macbook-air-motherboard-failure.html

Hey is it not a rare case anymore? But the guy in the link was lucky, as he had 2 year warranty (again - hardly enough in a prmeium product).

I ask the forum readers - please help me putting pressure on Apple to fix it for me without any charge.

I understand your point of view because I have been in a similar situation.
My first MacBook Pro (1,1) ran out of warranty after 12 months and 1 month later it didn't turn on anymore.

The internal power stuff was fried or something and they had to replace that for a few hundred bucks... I was also very sad to see this happen on a 1700 Euro machine.

Also the laptop has fried every single battery I've thrown at it ever since... Batteries die after less than 100 charge cycles and end up at under 40% health.

I haven't had the nerve to pay money again to rerepair it...
I have never had any problems with my future MacBooks 4,1 and 5,1 though...

So sadly I have to note once again that buyers of Apple products seem to have to expect failures of introduction models (1,1) shortly after the warranty period.

This is probably my last suggestion on this subject. You should check Israeli law on what is expected of High ticket items, longevity and so forth.

I remember reading on these boards about some similar situation (in the UK, I think) and laws that protect the consumer. I don't know who you should check with (do you have a Department of Commerce, or something similar?) but I would certainly consider this route.

For computers, it's pretty typical to see companies like Dell offering 4-year plans. Although it's my understanding that the presence of a warranty does not always guarantee an easy process to get something fixed.

At least in the U.S., there's sometimes a strange inverse relationship between the perceived quality of an expensive product and the length of its warranty. Like with cars, for instance: luxury brands (BMW, etc.) and high-reliability brands (Honda, etc.) usually carry shortest warranty periods (e.g., 3 years), while other brands need to use a warranty as a selling point (for a long time, Hyundai sold cars primarily via low price and a 10-year warranty).

But I would never buy a computer without having the maximum protection on it because I know that so many factors can lead to things going wrong. I wish Apple offered more than 3 years, but that's the way it goes. I guess the take-home point from this whole thread is that if you can't purchase AppleCare for your Mac, then +caveat emptor+.

It is too late for you to know - but it is possible to buy an Apple Care in Israel you can buy it from Apple shop or from ebay where it is even cheaper. You also could have bought a 3 years service from the Israeli Apple representative. The fact you did not trouble yourself to check it in advance is not Apple problem it is yours.

You are asking the forum readers to "help put pressure on Apple to fix it" OUT OF WARRANTY?

I ask the forum readers to actually READ AND UNDERSTAND the warranty BEFORE they purchase.

Just throw it off a building already so we can actually discuss something of interest besides you not reading and understanding the warranty before you bought it.

Jun 18, 2009 1:03 PM in response to MistaJ

Mista, you miss the whole point.
Instead of focusing on reading the small letters maybe just judge the whole situation? Imagine you buy a very expensive hiking shoes, and in the first time you hike - your small finger gets out of it. would you be happy with it? now 14 months is - no question - too short life for such an item, regardless warranty issue!!!

And...if you are so not-interested in the subject you are officialy dismissed from answering.
