Voice Control on iPhone 3G

Does anyone here know why the voice control feature is exclusive to the iPhone 3G[s]? From the looks of it from the keynote, it's a pure software feature, and has nothing to do with the hardware at all. Actually, I'm not quite sure how it could possibly be linked to the hardware because you have to use the same home button to activate it. Hopefully iPhone 3G users will see this function come out in a future 3.x software update...

I wouldn't bet on it coming to the 3G. The voice control app requires a lot of processor and RAM resources. The 3G S has twice the RAM and 50% faster processor than the 3G. Also, it's very unusual for a company to expend the R&D to add features in a new model into last years...

Much as I'd like the newest, bestest, etc., I don't see getting the S unless my 3G breaks. All that really interests me is the Voice Command feature- my RAZR had that, and I loved it. The VC apps available, no offense to anyone, really don't work well. I use my car's Hands-Free BT to make/receive calls, and have inputted-in the numbers I use frequently so I can voice dial (no help when walking around, though). I have a big old Nikon D300 for pictures and a little bitty Canon HF11 for HD video. I use a phone for phone functions and to carry pictures and cards (instead of my wallet, which has gotten much slimmer from using the Photos app and the CardStar app). Mail & Safari are nice when I need them, some of the other apps are handy, it's just a nice little tool. Looking forward to 3.0 for some upgrades in interface and the extras they are touting- though my car already has GPS. I'll wait for next year's model (due out June 19th, 2010, everybody already getting ready? 🙂 ) I do wonder what kind of battery longevity can be expected in the S. No one's really talking about that yet, just how crummy AT&T is to not give the things away. My guess is that there will be lots of posts within a week of rollout complaining about having to recharge nightly.

Is that a Mayan calendar date? If so, it's good that it's before Dec. 21, 2012...

Yes, they'll be shooting videos, surfing at "2X the speed", and voice commanding everything all day, expecting the battery to last longer than doing half as much on the 3G. It's going to be whine and rant central!

All things being equal, the S battery should last longer under some circumstances (not all battery times were increased):

However, a new toy gets played with a lot more than the old one. There will be plenty of posters here running their new S for hours longer than their old G, and complain that the battery doesn't last. Just wait...

I can't really know about that. And I don't think it would be possible that you send your iPhone to the Apple Store to put a new battery for iPhone 3GS in your 3G. Sounds to me that is way out of line.
In some other post, modular was talking about that this "new battery" is just a new design of circuitry that makes the battery works better for the 3GS.
When the 2.1 update came, I noticed an improvement in my battery life. It certainly saved a few time more than before. With 2.2 update that thing just disappeared, it went back to the previous battery life.
I would hope that 3.0 would improve a little the battery life, who knows, all I can ask is that doesn't makes it work less than know, ha ha.

this is ridiculous that its not included in the 3.0 update, i can understand how apple want to make money, but how many 3G users are going to switch to the 3G[s] just for the voice control? i think not that many, they would make more money adding it to the 3.0 update for 3G at a small cost, and it is entirely possible for it to work as well on the 3G as for the 3G[s].

i have a old laptop with 400Mhz processor ( like the iphone ) and only 64Mb of RAM and i have windows XP with MS office with voice operation on it, and windows is a bloated, resource hungry OS not a phone OS but it can handle it.

i wont be moving to the 3G[s] until : a) my 3G breaks
b) O2 let my upgrade from 3G - 3G[s] for a fraction of the cost
c) i was bought / given one

My WinMo Motorola device on VZW would let me launch many apps and do many things. No I could not control music, but unless I am wearing a headset with mic, it is easier to reach (without looking) and hit the pause, ffwd or rewind.

Besides, it is trivial to control apps with voice commands after the voice command software is implemented. Understanding "Stop" or "play" is no harder for the OS then understanding "Dial Frank Smith". Even if there is a hardware limitation on some of the voice features, at least implement the ones that should work on old hardware.

I like my iPhone, it does some great things, but there are plenty of examples of other products doing individual items better. The iPhone is the best mix of everything for me. Some things it does great, other things not so great or at all, BUT overall it is the best combination for me.

All I want VC for is to make hands-free phone calls. Yes, it would be really nice to walk down the street and say, "Beatles," and my iPod would start playing the Beatles, but, really, I can do it for myself with my hands if need be (this is not "Johnny Got His Gun" time ). But being able to make hands-free calls is a different story, especially for people who are driving cars with no VC BT in them. We have a hands-free law here in Calif. (though the police have really backed-off from enforcing it since the first two days 😟 ) which my RAZR had no problems with but my state-of-the-art iPhone can't do. THAT is a point that Apple needs to address. Modular, I'll give the app you mentioned a try, but I've used a couple so far and they fell far short. Now, if Apple's VC can do VC texting, I'd be truly impressed, and safer, due to so many people texting while drive. 🙂 (The foregoing was a joke, please don't start a thread on it!)

I agree that there is no apparant reason why a workable voice dialer can't be authored by Apple. I don't see them putting in bells and whistles.

But what can I to do about the arccos?

Why not? There are lots if threads that are jokes already.

Although the 3G has no dedicated app for Voice Dialing, the rest of the Apps developed for it works more or less fine with the iPhone. There is a function in the Yahoo! app that works seamlessly with the 3G, you say some words in the search mode, the app writes them and voila, there it is your search.
So, yes, it will be working better in the 3GS, but nothing more spectacular than this previous model we have.

The topic of this thread is whether the Apple "Voice Control" app as it is on the 3GS could be included in the 3G. It does a lot more than voice dial names in contacts. Besides numerical dialing, it plays songs, creates song lists and controls iPod functions. Did your Verizon do that?

If he had a Windows Mobile device with [MS Voice Command|http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/downloads/microsoft/voice- command-features.mspx], then yes it did more on slower cpus with far less RAM, than Apple's simpler voice control does today.

Voice dialing by number or name
Incoming caller announcement
Incoming email/SMS sender announcement
Read incoming texts
Get calendar for the day
Ask for next appointment(s) to be read to you
Launch apps or bring them to the front
Play music by artist, title, genre
Control ringer volume
Request battery status, time, date
etc

And it doesn't cover up the current screen when being used.

A person could get it for any WM5/6 phone, if it didn't come included by the carrier.
