Brand new imac - do i turn it on or off or put it to sleep?

Hi guys

I have recently bought a new imac 24inch widescreen computer - totally in love (i am recent pc to mac convert) however i need to know is it wise to turn off your imac after being on all day or leave it on to sleep? there is so much conflicting information on the net i thought i come to Apple directly.

I use my imac daily, and i have been told turning off my imac will increase the wear and tear and should leave it on.

What should i do?

many thanks x

imac 3.06 GHz, Mac OS X (10.5.7)

*"so what is the wear and tear supposed to be? "*

Every time you boot a computer, it's more work for the hard disk.

"Hard disks operate under extreme stress and will eventually fail due to general *wear and tear* accrued through age or some form of malfunction or failure."

Carolyn,

interesting article - thank you, but I will continue turning mine off. I do not agree that once a day constitutes excessive wear and tear - and wear and tear will happen regardless and, according to an Applecare rep some time ago, he personally turns his off every night. Sometimes my MBP is off for several days and my iMac may be off for 12 - 18 hours (only being used for 6 out of 24 hours) or longer. I refuse to waste all those energy resources and do not have to worry about power outages when it's off (and I'm not home to hear the UPS' screechy alarm).
