System Preferences | Screen Saver - running slow

I have just purchased a new iMac 3.06 GHz and used the Migration Assistant.app to transfer my user settings and files/folders from my old iMac G5. I did not transfer any application using the Migration Assistant.app.

Problem: As soon as I go to Screen Saver page within System Preferences I get the spinning beach ball and System Preferences runs extremely slow or stops responding. Sometime I can get back to the main System Preferences page using Show All but even then I get the spinning beach ball.

Library | Screen Savers is empty

I have run Onyx and reset the PRAM

This is new machine and other than MS Office nothing has yet to be installed. Are there any settings which may have been transferred from iMac which may be causing problems?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.7), 3.06 GHz

When you go into the system pref -> screensaver panel.

Do you see any of your iphoto albums?

Mine didn't have them and had this problem after migration to the new 13 MBP.
I ran the latest update for safari which apparently included some iphoto fixes.
Now the iphoto albums can be seen in screensaver and the hanging stops.

Try it.

Spotlight shortcut keys still will not stick though...

I've got the latest version of Safari running (4.0.1 5530.18) and all apple software is up to date.

I forgot to say earlier that I'd also created 2 new user accounts to see if that solved the problem, but alas no!

'Flurry' is the only screen saver that works at normal speed in the preview screen. All others either don't run or run v slowly, then freeze and spinning disk appears and generally I have to 'Force Quit'.

add me to the identical list of issues regarding computer hangs during screen saver selections. I have been following these posts and have tried the lists of possible fixes. Interestingly there are no problems on the original MBP that I migrated from using identical software including iLife 09. Deleted MANY .plists, disk repairs, disk permissions, ect.

At this point life is getting too short and I'm just going to settle with "flurry" screensaver

same problem here, after migration assistant going from old MacBookPro with 10.5.7 to new MacBookPro with 10.5.7. ilife'08 on the old MBP, and ilife'09 on the new MBP.

spent hours googling and deleting various plists, rebuilding iphoto lib etc. without success

probably unrelated, but perhaps worth mentioning, I also am having problems with the spotlight prefs pane not loading.

Wanted to say I'm having the same problem. Migrated from a black MacBook to the new MacBook pro. Went from iLife '08 on the old computer to iLife '09 on the new computer. When trying to access Desktop and Screen Saver System Preferences goes up to 50-100% of CPU and has to be force quit. I've also notices that iPhoto albums don't show up in the list of screen savers. Tried the suggestions in this thread to no avail, hopefully someone will come up with an answer soon.

I had the same issue, but was able to resolve it with combination of things, some of which are mentioned in this thread. The problem started when I migrated a user account from a G4 PowerBook running iLife '08 to a brand new Intel MacBook Pro running iLife '09. Same results; System Preferences for Desktop & Screen Savers would bog down with the Spinning Beach Ball of Death.

I did this, and so far it's working:

• Trashed all iLife preferences
• Downloaded and installed the iLife Support 9.0.3 update
• Repaired Disk Permissions using Disk Utility
• Opened iPhoto while holding down Command + Option
• Rebuilt the entire iPhoto Library, checking all 6 boxes in the Rebuild Photo Library pop-up window
• Rebooted in Safe Mode (restart while holding down the Shift key)
• At the login screen, clicked Restart, and again held down the Shift key booting into Safe Mode once again
• At the login screen, clicked Restart (boot caches may update at this point)
• After startup, shut the entire system down
• Restarted while holding down Command Option+PR (zapped PRAM); let the computer restart three times (three bongs)

After that, it worked like a charm. So far so good.

I'm glad it worked for somebody, Mr. Wiseman. No guarantees, of course. It seemed to be a combination of bad cache files, iPhoto Library needing updating, and the iLife Support fix from Apple. Still working fine on my boss' new 17" MacBook Pro. And his massive iPhoto Library now loads in seconds within his Desktop & Screen Savers System Preferences window.

If the fix didn't work for someone else out there, try it again, but follow the exact same steps as I outlined them above; even if you've already run the iLife Support update. Maybe you missed something.

*Correction: IT WORKS!*

I thought I had already installed the latest iLife'09 update as the version was 8.0.3, but I needed to go to the apple website and explicitly download and install the iLife 9.0.3 update, then do all the reset/bongy things you suggested.

It works perfectly now, and my problem with the SpotLight prefs pane freezing is also fixed.

Thanks very much for posting this solution.
