How do you get AVI files to play on iDVD

I have some avi movies i saved from my other computer and i wanted to burn them on a dvd.

i put the files on my mac, and for some reason they dont play on quicktime or wont work on iDVD. i even let it encode for an hour.

found out i need a certain codec.

I downloaded XVID bc that is the required codec for the video... nothing plays..

then i heard of people using perian, downloaded that and the video still doesnt play

what do i do?

Macbook Pro (2.4 Ghz), Mac OS X (10.5.6)

avi is a container format, the actual codec inside could vary widely. I tried to convert a web cam .avi file a few years ago and ended up having to use a codec that only worked under System 9. You may want to try a conversion on your pc (since avi is a pc format) to something that's easier for Mac to understand. Or, find a friend with Visual Hub, Quicktime Pro, Roxio Toast, etc. and see if one of those works.
