Activation Server down?

Still getting this at this time. I was able to download the update but once I try to upgrade the phone to 3.0 it attempts to connect to the activation server but cannot.

I had to restart my computer after i downloaded the update. Then when i reconnected my phone it asked if i wanted to install the update, I said yes and everything went fine.

I am getting the same error message here. What the heck is going on. Its only 3:13 here in Chicago and there is already problems.

Sadly this always happens when there's a new major iPhone OS release.

What i don't get is why "updating" the OS means you need to contact the activation server. I mean if your phone is already activated why would they need to verify it again?

I agree, you would think that they would have learnt from last year and allowed people to upgrade so long as they activated within say 30 days to smooth out the load. Come on apple, use your noddle!

Not for me it isn't you must have got lucky 😉

I am just gonna wait till the "Just Gotta Have It NOW" people get theirs... and then I can plug in my iPhone, download the upgrade, install it, see all the new stuff.... all done while sipping something cool, and relaxing in my chair. I do not think Apple will put a limit on how many people can upgrade,... so why do we need to rush... really?

This solution worked for me. Found it on Mac Rumors.
At the point at which the software is being extracted (assuming you have been able to download it) turn off your internet connection.
The software installation then proceeds without a problem.
At the point at which you get the message saying "can't connect to the itunes store" turn your internet connection back on.
I then had to eject the iphone and physically unplug the usb lead, then plugged back in and it has worked fine.
Not sure why it works but it does.

Turn off your network after downloading the update before install. I believe the updater checks for a network connection and if it finds it attempts to register with the server. If no network connection detected it will just proceed with the firmware update.

Yep, I did the download in 3 minutes but I'm getting this error message too. I have better things to do so I'll do that authentication later.

In the meantime, y'all make me laugh. The sun will still rise in the morning.

I have downloaded 3.00 and all works ok, I did have to do a resart.

But being told " PATIENCE HUMANS! " when your phone has crashed is not to helpfull is it now?

Ok, this problem is global, I'm from Mexico City and also have the same problem, but in spanish he he... itunes tells me that the activation server is not available, so I'm thinking the problem goes worldwide, possible overflow from all the people trying to update, but is always the same when a mayor update is released by the iphone, try tomorrow again or keep trying until the traffic goes down or Apple restore the server.

I use to think as Apple very highly, but, every time it looks more like Microsoft, duh!

Thanks for the suggestion jpwumatillaFl. I rebooted my Mac as well and it worked. Who would have thought. Hmm update iPhone ... reboot laptop. Yea, I guess that makes sense. :-/
