Sony Ericsson W995 'Media Go'

hello,

im not sure if this is posted in the correct forum so appologies if not.
im looking to connect my new w995 phone to my mac using the 'media go' facility thats offered by sony ericsson. im told and through experience this wont work as its only been designed for pc's. is there any way round this or is there any other free software i can download that will offer the same functionality?

my main issues are transferring films and videos to watch on the phone as well as storing contacts in case i lose my phone. i know i can access the 'mass storage' via the usb in a drag and drop method but this doesnt solve either issues. i think i need to find a program that will convert my quicktime movies to the relevant format(to which im unsure of) to enable me to 'drag and drop' them. will i need to reduce the quallity/size of the QT films so i can play them? the films availible online to download for my phone are aprox. 140mb where as QT films i have on my computer are between 700mb and 1gb.

any help regarding this will be greatly appreciated.

You can't use Media Go on a Mac, but try one of these third-party alternatives:

Contacts and Calendars can be synced via iSync using an iSync Plugin such as this one.

Brilliant. this is exactly the type of thing i was looking for.

however, ive just transferred over an episode of 'king of the hill' and there is a significant loss of picture and sound quality. is there any way round this?

im sure there as its been done with the films available for download.

any ideas?

Some loss of quality is to be expected when re-encoding video from one format to another. However, I would expect there to be some compression options when you can adjust the quality to your preference. At a quick glance I couldn't see them, so it may be a question for the support forum of the program in question.

okay thanks, ive emailed them asking for help.

does anyone else out there know of a way of dong this? or have a better experience with different software?

my main concern is keeping the videos at the best playback quality as possible.

I've used VisualHub (no longer available, but still usuable if you have it) to convert movies for my Sony Ericsson phones. It gives you greater control over compression settings.

You can even use QuickTime Pro if you want. Export to mp4 and experiment with the settings until you find ones acceptable to you.

Handbrake will export to mp4 too and is probably the best tool overall if you want lots of control over the end result.

Bear in mind though, there's generally no "one setting fits all" solution when it comes to video encoding. It depends on the source material and what quality you want the end result to be. So be prepared to do alot of small encodes first to find settings that play back acceptably on your phone.

done it. finally!

i tried handbrake but found it gave me too much control and i ended up lost with all its options and settings.
i found a program called '4media mp4 converter' and it works brilliantly. perfect in fact. just convert the file and drag and drop it to the video folder in the 'mass storage' function, done. i now have the same quality on my phone as on my mac and im very pleased. i recommend to all who wish to watch tv show length videos on their sony ericsson phone with optimum playback.

Hi Daniel,

Your thread was very interesting to me as I have also just got the new W995 Sony Ericsson phone. Although I think my problem is more basic than yours - when I use the USB to connect the phone, it doesn't seem to be recognised by the Mac and does not come up in my Finder window. This means I can't even do the basic drag & drop you mention. Did you have to do anything in particular with your phone or Mac in order to get it up & running?

Any tips, greatly appreciated!

Which USB mode are you choosing when connecting it?

*File Transfer/Mass Storage* is the option to select for dragging and dropping files.

*Phone Mode* is for syncing.

*Media transfer* is for transferring media using or Sony Ericsson Media Sync.

That depends.

1) Sony Ericsson don't have iSync Plugins for all their phones, and only recently started offering any.
2) Sony Ericsson's plugins are from a third-party. They're novamedia.de plugins re-packaged.
3) Sony Ericsson provide absolutely no technical support to Mac users whatsoever, whereas third-party plugin providers are known for their fast, high quality tech support. So, if you have a problem with an SE Plugin you're on your own.

There are free alternatives for virtually every type of software you can get, yet people still choose to pay for commercial offerings. Why is that? Because you generally get what you pay for in features or support.

I recently bought the W995 aswell, and was quite annoyed that the software provided doesnt support mac. Anyway, the program you suggested, '4media mp4 converter' looks like it does the trick, and thanks for sharing it. I wanted to ask you what settings did you use, since im a bit puzzled, like the profile, video and audio quality, as im trying to convert some movies for my phone.
