Original iPhone 3.0 upgrade - No battery life and running warm to hot

I upgraded my original iPhone to 5.0 with no problems. After playing around with some of the new features I noticed that my iPhone was hot to the touch. I left it alone for a while in standby and it was still warm. I turned off "Find My iPhone" thinking it had something to do with running hot, it made no difference. I also noticed my battery life is shot. At 4:30 I had a full charge and only used the phone once. It has been in standby mode since that call, it is now 8:20 and I am down to 10%. Something is running that is killing my battery. Anyone else experience this problem?
Any help here will be greatly appreciated.

I do believe that the new push notification system (for apps) is the culprit. I was having this problem on my original iPhone with wifi on, notifications on, email push off. I turned off wifi and notifications and restarted the phone, no problems. Turned wifi on, restarted, no problems. It was only when I turned notifications on that the phone started getting really slow and eating up battery again.

I turned notifications off and restarted and the problem went away, so if you're having this problem try turning off notifications (Settings > Notifications) and see if it helps. Hopefully a real fix for this will emerge soon.

You have to have to start up a push-enabled app first before that option will show up. Something like AP Mobile News or Tap Tap 2. That is strange that you have no push enabled apps and still experiencing the same symptoms.

After more testing I can definitely say that it has something to do with push for me. The second I turn it on everything gets slower, even scrolling home screen pages back and forth is no longer smooth. I have to turn it off then restart in order to make it go away.

I had the same problem, hot phone and battery life gone when I got to the office this morning. After a few minutes my phone completely died and I couldn't get it to charge again. Finally after a few hours it charged and is now fully charged, not hot, and normal battery usage (so it seems so far). I'm wondering if the phone needs to be shut off after the install is done. I know it reboots but I'm thinking something is run on initial startup after the reboot that isn't finishing cleanly. Just something to try, I don't know if any tried shutting off the phone for a minute when it was running hot.

For whatever reason the phone seems fine now so I'm happy...

I updated to 3.0 this morning. Phone is running hot and eating battery (full charge to -20% in an hour and a half). Turned off everything possible, no help. Symtoms lead me to believe it is the radio running constantly. I will restore back to factory until this gets corrected...sheesh. I have 5 other iPhone users here where I work and I am the only one experiencing these symtoms.

Ditto for me on everything. Took phone off charger at 8am, only took one 10 minute call, and battery is at 10% at 1pm. I didn't do anything else with the phone.

I wonder if there are any commonalities between others with this problem during upgrade. Here's what I did:

1. Connected iPhone 3G to iTunes. Updated to 3.0
2. Configured Notes sync. Accidentally deleted my Notes
3. Restored my iPhone with a backup. Got my Notes back. Turned on Push notification
4. Resynced. Everything is perfect now
5. Charged phone overnight
6. Took phone off charger at 8am. Put it in my pocket and went to work. Noticed phone was extremely warm. Took phone out and put it on my desk
7. At 12pm, took a 10 minute call. Phone was still warm when I picked it up
8. At 12:15pm, received another call, could not hear anything. Determined it was the iPhone
9. Noticed battery was unusually low
10. Shutdown iPhone and turned it back on
11. Got 20% battery level notification at 12:30pm
12. Got back to charger at 1pm, got battery at 10% battery
13. iPhone is charging now. It's still extremely warm on the screen and the back of the phone
14. Typing this post
15. Waiting on Apple...

I posted earlier that turning off WiFi fixed it for me. Turns out that wasn't correct.

It does seem to be related to the email data "Push" settings.

Our Exchange server is not set up properly for ActiveSync. When the 2.0 software came out, I tried to get it to work but never did. I decided to look into to it again today and while at it, I looked at the EventViewer Application log for "Server ActiveSync." There were errors from my iPhone logged 40 to 60 times per minute, every minute, starting yesterday after I installed 3.0 and messed with the iPhone Push settings. That's once per second...every second. The log is filled with these.

The time periods during which my phone was running hot and the battery being consumed quickly matches the times where these accesses/errors show up in the Exchange server's logs.

* The iPhone gets stuck making continuous connections to the "push" server, which keeps the CPU running all the time and kills the battery. *

This should be really easy for Apple to catch (and hopefully fix).

(In my case, turning off wifi probably just slowed down the traffic that the phone was generating giving it time to sleep a bit)

So, if you're having this problem, set Settings -> Mail, ... -> Fetch New Data -> Push = OFF

(and possibly check whatever server you were trying to get "pushes" from and see if something is erroring out there...)

Since I turned off push my iPhone has been fine, it is cool to touch and battery has been strong all day.
Now if I can get my iPhone to realize I do have data plan with AT&T, though not an iPhone data plan, things will be back to normal.
In an earlier post in this topic I mentioned an issue with iTunes not showing that the iPhone fully charged, lighting bolt to plug, even though the iPhone showed it was fully charged and showed the plug in the battery. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me.

I BELIEVE I HAVE A FIX:

I just noticed at first when I was out of wi-fi range that my Edge data connection wasn't working, kept giving me an error message when I tried to access data. I guess it hasn't been working since the update.

The fix for that was here: http://limitededitioniphone.com/iphone-os-3-0-7a341-kills-any-non-iphone-data-pl an-yeah-right-ive-got-you-covered
(typing this from my iPhone, yay copy and paste)

Now when I turn on push, everything stays snappy, and no lag, or excess heat. It would make sense that without a cellular network connection to the push server, the phone would keep trying to establish one, hence the pegged CPU and lag/ low battery life.

See if you can use Edge on your phone and if not, try this fix. Should take about 30 seconds.

After an upgrade to 3.0 my unit also flattened a fully charged battery overnight, then I noticed on my wireless router that there was constant wlan activity, selecting airplane or turning off the wifi stopped this activity, but it returned when re-enabled. Having told the iphone to forget my wifi details and power cycled it, it has now connected correctly to the wifi (after re-ntry of the key etc.) and there is now no activity when idle as would be expected.

Why did it do this though is what bothers me and will the problem return?

I had same issues (overheat and fast discharge) on my 2G with 3.0.

After reading this whole thread, I tried turning off the "SSL" in my Exchange mail account and noticed that the constant buzz from a nearby speaker has vanished AND the heating disappered noticably in a couple of minutes.

After 15 minutes I turned SSL back on and hear no noise on the speakers nor notice any overheating. But its too early to celebrate. I am waiting for 3.0.1.

This is an unacceptable software release from Apple. They are losing respect with a shoddy job like this.

Update: The noise is back after a while and battery is discharging pretty fast too. Its not as warm yet, but guessing thats not too far either. This *****. I will wait until tomorrow to go back to 2.2.1.

Thanks for the info on the APN. I downloaded the utility and installed the custom APN on my iPhone and I now can connect via Edge. I was a little unsure about using the utility, the directions didn't explain how to use the utility. I found the APN under the advanced button. Exported it via email. The only thing I did not see on the install was Choose option. But it worked. thanks again for the web site.
