Original iPhone 3.0 upgrade - No battery life and running warm to hot

I upgraded my original iPhone to 5.0 with no problems. After playing around with some of the new features I noticed that my iPhone was hot to the touch. I left it alone for a while in standby and it was still warm. I turned off "Find My iPhone" thinking it had something to do with running hot, it made no difference. I also noticed my battery life is shot. At 4:30 I had a full charge and only used the phone once. It has been in standby mode since that call, it is now 8:20 and I am down to 10%. Something is running that is killing my battery. Anyone else experience this problem?
Any help here will be greatly appreciated.

Same problem here..my Iphone 3g was running flawlessly until I installed 3.0 , I have had to charge it 3 times a day so far and it will randomly shut off and reboot,my biggest concern is the overheating issue , even just sitting on the desk not plugged in it feel very warm....I had a full charge at 6am...now at8:46 not having used any applications it is charged less than half way..I guess it's time to make a trip to the Apple store...yikes not today though....

i "upgraded" to 3.0 and then had a bunch of problems. so i restored it twice... i didn't even realise my battery life was getting wasted until it died when i was out.. but anyways i believe the cause of the battery drain is the new notifications feature. i had about 20% battery life, turned only that function off (only wifi was on though), but my batttery lasted about another 10hrs before giving out. and the overheating went away too..

OK. After much trial and error, I seem to have narrowed down the issue to the Push feature when used in conjunction with my work e-mail's Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. When I disabled the Push feature for the Exchange account, my phone's battery life returned to normal, and I no longer felt that I had a hot brick attached to my belt.

To disable Push for Exchange, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data > Advanced > [Name of Exchange account]. Then choose to use Fetch rather than Push for that account.

I left Push on for my Yahoo and MobileMe accounts, and things still work fine.

Hope this solves the issue (for now) for at least some of you out there.

The theme here seems to be push on exchange servers. As soon as I turn on Push, I literally can watch my battery % drop over a few minutes. If I specifically turn off the push on the exchange server (through Fetch New Data>Advanced>"account name">Fetch) everything's back to normal (except for the fact that the exchange server isn't pushing my data to me!). Apple could fix this real quick by simply renaming the push toggle to "kill battery".

I have the same problem. The battery started draining really fast after I installed 3.0. I just spoke to an Appletalk person and he told me that this was the first he has heard of this problem. He suggested I go to the Apple store and get my phone diagnosed. The first appt. available was on Monday. He also said that 3.0.1 would be available in "a few weeks".

I have turned off push and location services, pulled out my sim card, restarted the phone and reset the phone to factory settings. I am charging the phone to see if any of this helps.

After waiting with anticipation for this upgrade needless to say I am very very disappointed in Apple.

I have 18 month old 2G iPhone.
I have push yahoo email, push activesync of exchange and about 5 other IMAP fetch emails.
I have no problems with a warm phone or low battery life.

I made a full backup and sync, clean restored to 2.2.1, updated to 3.0 and then restored from backup and synced. I always do it this way to blow out the cobwebs.
