Original iPhone 3.0 upgrade - No battery life and running warm to hot

I upgraded my original iPhone to 5.0 with no problems. After playing around with some of the new features I noticed that my iPhone was hot to the touch. I left it alone for a while in standby and it was still warm. I turned off "Find My iPhone" thinking it had something to do with running hot, it made no difference. I also noticed my battery life is shot. At 4:30 I had a full charge and only used the phone once. It has been in standby mode since that call, it is now 8:20 and I am down to 10%. Something is running that is killing my battery. Anyone else experience this problem?
Any help here will be greatly appreciated.

Turning off 'push', or checking that the APN settings are correct, certainly seems to be the logical fix for this. I urge anyone who is having problems with the battery life to run the phone connected to your computer whilst the iPhone Config Utility is running, that way you can see the error for yourself - if it isn't the same one I described, post it here and I'll try and provide a suggestion as to how to fix it...

But remember, your phone is basically a small computer - the battery is draining really fast because the CPU is doing an awful lot of work, same reason for the heat...

I agree that Push is to blame.
I turned it off on Friday, and the phone lasted all weekend without re-charging. Now I'm back at my desk, I turned push 'on' and immediately heard the carackling noise through my external speakers - a sure sign that the phone is working hard and draining the battery. This did not happen before upgrading to OS3.

Oh, and I tried the APN site that was recommended here so the phone now has a dummy APN. That has not stopped it going crazy when push is on - after about 15 mins, it is staring to heat up on the back close to the Apple logo.

Since this upgrade I have the original iPhone. I now have a slow phone, no battery life. I left the phone on my computer to charge after the upgrade. I went back to the phone about 3 hours later. I got a RED battery. The phone did not charge. I tried to sync it. It would not sync. I unplugged it from my computer and charged it directly with the plug in the outlet. When I plugged it in to the outlet I could see the RED battery slide away (I never saw that before). Now I have lines on my screen and cannot see through them (where the RED battery was). The phone is so slow. When I turn it on it takes about 2 minutes. iTunes won't always see my phone when I plug it in to the dock. I have upgraded all my software. So what is the problem? Now I have a phone I cannot see the screen where the RED battery was and I have a very very slow phone.

Any help?????? I did not drop my phone. Just weird that where the battery was is now full of lines.

Thanks,

The only thing I've noticed and annoys me is the cellular signal strength and wifi connection on my originnal iPhone has gotten much worse. I used to get a great wifi connection on the second floor of my house (my Airport is in the basement), but now it's goes up and down a lot and often it just drops. I also used to get a decent cellular signal on the second floor too (I never got a good signal in my house anyway), not anymore. It seems Apple is already starting to forget about the original iPhone. They obviously didn't do as much testing for it than the iPhone 3G. I would like to get the new iPhone 3G S I just don't have the money for it right now.

I'm sorry to hear that so many of you are having such issues with the 3.0 Upgrade and your iPhones- I have a first gen iPhone and was an early adopter-My first phone had issues only 1 day before Applecare ran out (lucky for me) and the Apple store gave me a new (refurbished) one last July- I upgraded this morning to 3.0 and had no trouble at all with either the download or the phone operations. In fact I am very happy with the new features added (CUT AND PASTE!!! etc) I hope the issues get worked out-

I find it hard to belive that this is a "push" issue as it occurs fit me ONLY when the radios are silenced via airplane mode. Last night I also turned off Push and Notifications and I get the same problem of an overheating iPhone.

The iPhone is overheating near the top where the CPU is, not where the battery is, so I'm stumped as to what is causing the CPU to overload in sleep and airplane and am worried about a possible safety issue. My phone gets dangerously hot!

I agree with MJ.
Got the same problem with overheating and battery draining after upgrading to 3.0. I "disabled" data traffic by change APN so my mail sync by push only worked while connected through wifi. When i connected iphone to computer i saw errors that got solved when i disabled push or entered the right APN. After disabled push the heating was gone and the battery seems to last longer than before 3.0.
