3.0 Bulgarian Keyboard not working

Hi guys,

There seems to be a bug in 3.0 - when you select bulgarian keyboard, nothing happens. It is not working. Instead when you press the globe and switch to bulgarian, it is still a normal QWERTY keyboard.

Anyone has any ideas how to contact Apple so that they could fix this, because it is really annoying?

iPhone 3G, iPhone OS 3.0

I think it is rather a misunderstanding than a bug. It is true, that in Bulgaria we tend to use Latin Alphabet for SMS. It is also common for emails, even though this trend is wearing off. Nevertheless, this is only due to (past) technical limitations. The official alphabet in Bulgaria is Cyrillic. A bit offtopic - by providing a Latin keyboard layout as "Bulgarian" Apple is making a strategical mistake - people inclined to install a Bulgarian keyboard layout tend tend to also be proud of being Bulgarian and writing in Cyrillic. Our alphabet has a very significant place in our cultur and history, and neglecting it might be considered offensive by the users. All in all, it is better to provide no layout at all rather than Latin.

The iPhone is sold in Bulgaria, therefore, it should have support for the Bulgarian keyboard and language. End of story.

I was really excited to see the Bulgarian keyboard in the new iPhone OS, then depressed to see that it's just the latin characters.

MacOSX already supports Bulgarian, why doesn't the iPhone OS?

Apple, please fix this. I'm tired of using the Russian keyboard on the iPhone.

It's an error (bug). No one who knows anything about Bulgaria thinks they (or in Macedonia) use Latin alphabet - you would have to know quite a bit about Bulgaria to know that it is common for younger people to use a non-native alphabet for computer/phone related tasks. Only Serbian has the option for Cyrillic or Latin, and this is, historically speaking, very recent. I'm not Bulgarian, but speak it, and I find this quite annoying, or even offensive, particularly when I see some other countries with a smaller number of native speakers that have keyboard support.

If it's included in the install, it should just work.

Back to the Russian keyboard, I guess (bleh).

I doubt this applies, but worth a try perhaps:

Thanks, I actually did find that page earlier. The work-around doesn't help (and Bulgarian is not one of the mentioned keyboards, anyway). I had already tried disabling and re-enabling English (qwerty) keyboard, but it had no effect. I was trying to use the keyboard in Notes and I think SMS.

I talked to Apple yesterday (1-800-MyIphone).

They recorded the bug and will escalate with the engineers on Monday.
Apparently they didn't have the bug recorded before (I was the first to tell them).
I will keep tabs on the issue this week and hopefully they will fix it in the next release.

Не знам защо не си тестват продукта като хората. Ще им кажа да ми пратят АйФон 4 за тестове преди да го пуснат на пазара в България 🙂

Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian...

None of those are included in the tech specs for what the iPhone is supposed to be able to do. It seems likely that everything in that category is non-functioning. Could you tell us what keyboards you are able to choose which are not listed on the Languages/Keyboard Support section of this page?

I finally found the time to call Apple again. So, here's the update:
.
An agent is escalating with the engineers. She gave me her e-mail and I will be able to follow up more easily now.
She requested 4-6 business days (i.e., till the end of next week).
.
.
.
P.S. Our call ended with a sales pitch for extended warranty on my phone.
Apparently AT&T forces you to sign for 2 years, but Apple only guarantees the hardware for one year. So the girl behaved like a good salesperson and shot me the offer to extend my warranty. At that point I didn't exactly appreciate the irony of a sales pitch for something I should already have. And that during a call about faulty features. Anyhow, it's not the sales people fault -- it's a business model designed to squeeze its clients' cash from all sides.
No more complaints, though -- it's a great phone after all 🙂
